Time for me to be even more geeky. While the processor of the Genesis was the more powerful one, the snes was able to show more color (256 on screen out of 32768, compared to 64 on screen out of 512 for the Genesis), had more advanced sound capabilities (Thanks to a special chip from Sony) and more memory.
What it mean is that while the Genesis was able to put more action on screen, the snes looked and sounded better.
Anyway, the Neo Geo back then was more powerful that either of them, it was a real (costly) powerhouse.

Game Gear was the most powerful handheld console of its time. Game Boy Advance surpassed it, but that was about 10 years later.
Too bad it was so hungry for battery, which is one of the reason it failed. Pretty much everyone had made more powerful handled than Nintendo, forgetting all the while it had to be
pratical handled, only Sony didn't totally failed.
