google stuff about installing it, there is lots of wiki hows and diy forums, that should give you an idea of whats appropriate and safety.

If you cant face having workmen in perhaps you could persuade a friend to wait in and supervise them for you? I nearly always get my mum to stay for workmen and I go out as i find it so stressful and unbearable.
