Alien fans - a question
I have not seen Prometheus and don't plan to any time soon. But the other thread has got me thinking a lot about Alien.
If some bright spark in hollywood decided to do a remake of Alien what would you imagine they would do?
I know it absolutely does not need a remake but I reckon it will be on the cards one day. I have wondered about this and imagined they would make a film abotu some silly teenagers stealing their parents space shuttle and flying around having fun while smoking some weird stuff. Then they crash on a planet and go "hey cool lets go and look around..." Then they discover the derelict space craft and the eggs....
And then I would love watching the Alien kill them all.
OR
They could try to make the film that the very original script told. Where the people land on the planet and discover the Alien artifacts and wall carvings of the alien lifecycle. Forget about the company and Ash and try to make it like more about the aliens history and environment.
I'd imagine Option 1, they'd make it all about the clueless kids getting killed and would be much more explicitly gory and with lots of CGIs and nothing hidden in the shadows. It might be fun to watch but would have zero suspense. Option 2 kind of sounds a bit like Prometheus (which I enjoyed btw). I always liked the theme that the alien was a metaphor for ruthless capitalism. I think a remake would probably dispense with that as well.
They'd most likely do it in the fashion of option 1 which would not be very good (Kinda like Alien Vs Predator: Requiem). I doubt any remake will ever live up to the original, although Prometheus was pretty good.

"Bright spark?" More like nothing is sacred.

I know you mean no harm by your topic but reading this made my stomach turn. I don't see a remake ever happening in Ridley Scott's lifetime, but maybe after he's been dead for a quarter of a century, maybe not.
Either of those ideas would be bad, part of what makes Alien is the fact that The Company are the true monsters and the xenomorph we all love is more of a force of nature that serves as a backdrop for the story. If I want more conjecture on their biology I'll read the novels, comic books or play the video games, I really don't think a movie that exposes to us every single aspect of the xenomorph would do more than cause rage with the devoted fans and bore the casual movie goer.
For your first idea, just watch the Alien Vs Predator movies, don't those have lots of annoying teenagers getting iced? I've never watched more than 20 minutes of each, but I can't stand them and I feel like any Alien movie without a decent director would be far too much like those movies.
In an ideal universe anyone with the means and access to make an Alien remake would immediately suffer from a brain hemorrhage and that would be that. My mind just can't process a remake, even if it wasn't terrible it would in no way be able to live up to its predecessor. I hope directors in the future are smart enough to let good things rest and think up their own ideas without perverting classics in a coat of gaudy paint.

The latter would be an interesting idea, then audiences could finally learn about where the Xenomorph species originated. As for the former, if Alien so much is touched by money-grabbing greedy corporate suits, then i will commit nuclear genocide on Hollywood

Every Alien film has had the company involved in some way, even if Alien 3 and AVP:R only had something near the end, I have hope that as long as fans keep their opinions known, we won't get just some sad exuse of remake of a Xenomorph killing stupid teens. As it is the Xenomorph's biology is set, so I don't see them changing that, popular topics is of homeworlds, like Xenomorph's mentioned in the recent AVP game, and Prometheus, which sequels will likely touch on it. As it is those movies may even get to their origin.

I just watched the original again yesterday and I see no reason for it to be remade. The acting is good, the visuals are beautiful, (especially on the blu-ray) and the film as a whole is still pretty darn scary. That being said, that makes it a pretty likely target for a remake. The only thing I could see a remake improving upon is making the computers not look so outdated. But I really hope they have the sense to just leave it alone.

The giant black screen apple computers that make loud noises while "computing decisions" are awesome as hell compared to how they'd portray them in a more modern remake. I don't want to see them go.
Those computers are awful, are honestly meant to believe that people got rid of proper colour, easy interface, complexity, and for incredibly boring computers that hurt your eyes to look at, it almost as hard to believe as the idea that people use pure orange interfaces for the omni-tools in Mass Effect, but at least it does not make apparently communicating with some advanced computer, harder than talking to some guy on MSN.
Actually the more I think about it, the more I like the idea of a purely asthetic remake, leave the story generally alone, give us a holographic Mother, prettier CG of ship, a chestburster that does not make me giggle when I see it, and still throw some curve balls in to keep me in suspense. Mother could work like hologram in the Resident Evil film, good chance to make us hate it's orders, add or change a few characters so this is not just some kind of reuse of script, unfortuantly we probably would not see Sigourney, but an actress who can generally do a good enough job, so we can see what Alien could be with some slight improvments. Maybe some 3D, unfortuantly did not watch Prometheus that way, but it could work.
Still love the original movie, strangely my 10 year old brother wanted to watch it was on tv, to teach him a lesson I let him, but he was actually ok with it, only scene he was really scared by was the part where the Xenomorph jumps out of the dark in that ventalation scene, which usually gets me too. Of course I got in trouble from my mother, but I do wonder if he could watch the other ones, will still probably have to cover his eyes in the sexy scenes.

I loved the old movies, but a remake might actually be interesting to see. Knowing Hollywood, they'd probably go for Option 1, seeing as how they have a hard time coming up with new ideas these days.
I'd love to see something like the original movie, but with more twists. Scientists on an expedition have discovered a new planet, and when they go down to investigate, they find themselves right in the middle of an alien nest that's about ready to spawn. Fighting for their lives, while trying to escape at the same time, they try to unravel the secrets of this new species.
Okay, so maybe I'm not the best movie director.
Honestly, I love the Alien universe but I'd like a fresh new movie or series, perhaps inspired by the first movie. I'd prefer that to any kind of remake, I think the industry is far too saturated with rehashes and we need some fresh ideas. Science fiction has really suffered a lot too, compared to the golden age of the 70s and 80s.
I was kind of hoping for that with Prometheus, but I don't hate what we got.
Too much here for me to make much of a point about anything.. But I do hope they leave the original alone. Still scares the crap out of me though. Am hoping for a little back story from prometheus so I may well have more of an opinion on further exploration of the beautiful and terrible alien universe after that. Can't help but be curious about any continuation though.think requiem could've been a lot better by simply keeping Paul Anderson as director. Like mortal kombat I think he had a reasonably good idea of a direction.. As it was, I couldn't even focus on it was so poorly lit. The terror of dark in Alien was damn near perfect though. Too good cos i'm afraid to watch it lol
Regarding the computers in Alien. Yeah they are outdated now, but I think that adds something to the run down ship they are all on.
The only bit in the original Alien I think needs any attention is the Alien at the end when it falls out of the shuttle. I am not sure what could be done but thats the only bit I can think of. Oh and perhaps the bit where the Aliens tail gets hold of Lambert.
I think the chestburster scene is still brilliant and real. The bit where Dallas is in the air shafts has always been the most scary part for me.
It will be like the remake of total recall, a disaster.
