Do you give out a lot of critical remarks?
I do - although I rarely do it to be mean, or with the intention of being mean. But I do it often.
When people show me music I always say things I think they could have done better/differently, etc. Part of this is because I pretty much never receive criticism, but I WANT it, because I want to know what could be better - but people seem to always just want to compliment - they do it to others, too. Face-to-face, most people seem to give only positive feedback about music, from my observations.
Then people assume I don't like something because I criticized it, when usually that is not the case.
People have also told me I'm too honest about people's playing - if someone isn't very good at their instrument I'm quick to point it out.
Another thing is if I'm jamming with someone who is not very good at it, I don't simplify my playing to make it easier for them - I just hear the empty space created by their simple playing, and fill it with my playing. I was jamming with a few friends of the drummer in one of my bands (at the drummer's place), and after jamming a song out they asked me if I could stop going so far out on the solos because they had trouble following along - I don't understand how this is a problem though - I did them to the same chord progression we had been doing for that specific song, so all they had to do was play their parts and follow along.
