Do you give out a lot of critical remarks?

I do - although I rarely do it to be mean, or with the intention of being mean. But I do it often.

When people show me music I always say things I think they could have done better/differently, etc. Part of this is because I pretty much never receive criticism, but I WANT it, because I want to know what could be better - but people seem to always just want to compliment - they do it to others, too. Face-to-face, most people seem to give only positive feedback about music, from my observations.

Then people assume I don't like something because I criticized it, when usually that is not the case.

People have also told me I'm too honest about people's playing - if someone isn't very good at their instrument I'm quick to point it out.

Another thing is if I'm jamming with someone who is not very good at it, I don't simplify my playing to make it easier for them - I just hear the empty space created by their simple playing, and fill it with my playing. I was jamming with a few friends of the drummer in one of my bands (at the drummer's place), and after jamming a song out they asked me if I could stop going so far out on the solos because they had trouble following along - I don't understand how this is a problem though - I did them to the same chord progression we had been doing for that specific song, so all they had to do was play their parts and follow along.

Yes, and people tend to take it very personally and become hurt at me. They think I'm intentionally trying to hurt their feelings, whereas I'm only trying to help them out. Maybe I'm saying things too harshly with the wrong tone of voice... I know people don't take that well at all.

Yes, I can be very critical. I don't think I'm being critical but as it turns out that's what I am doing sometimes when I am simply trying to put my reactions into words. Kind of frustrating, and I'd rather tone it down under most circumstances.

I don't feel like I'm being critical either, but I'm told that I am. I feel like I'm just speaking my mind, or stating facts, or things like that, and it never feels like it will upset people, but it often does.

Critical.? very.
I don't give respect and compliments as a right, which irks people, especially in positions of authority.

Of course, criticism of third parties can be entertaining to other people in the right context. Plot holes anyone? :D

I try not to, because people hardly ever do it to me. I am a natural pessimist and see fault in everything. And so I know I am not perfect, but it is so frustrating that people will often allow me to think that I am, by never telling me what I do wrong. For example, my housemates over the years: I will get annoyed enough with something that I will have to ask them to stop doing it. Not once has a housemate told me anything I did was annoying. I want to know, though! To think that I am bugging someone and they are suffering in silence is a horrible thought.

Your "I" is not bold enough and your italics lean funny.

Take that!

Is this where you start criticizing eachothers' criticisms to prove who is the most critical? Seems kind of silly, incidentally by criticizing that process, I take the lead :D .

I try to give constructive criticism and tips for improving work.

Generally, to avoid causing discouragement and frustration, I don't voice my entire opinion on certain things - particularly creative works.

Hmm, then again I do have 1114 posts including this one, and I've been on WP longer. You could have started coming here and leaving critical remarks sooner.

OK I was going to get you back by criticizing the lack of space between 'each' and 'others', but I don't want to side track this thread. so I've decided to be the responsible adult type and not tell you that you forgot a space between "each" and "others".
