I've been told by my sisters and some cousins that I walk funny. I don't even realize it but I'm very self conscious when I walk in front of anyone... idk how I'm supposed to walk! I try standing up straight but my back starts to hurt really bad. I wish I could take a video of myself walking to see what's to odd about my gait.

Anyone else been told how odd or funny you walk? If so is there anything to help improve my walk so that I can look more normal?

For me it's just constant practice and "walking in the room as if you own the place" mindset. I still have bad posture and a funny way of walking, but if I slow down and be constantly conscious about it I do okay.

I have an abnormal gait when I walk, especially for a girl. My mom says that I walk just like my dad, but I have noticed that I hunch forward a little too much. I can "imitate" walking with a proper posture but it takes a lot out of me.

I have been told that I walk like a lumber jack and a caveman by two different people.

I recall when I was in 3rd grade, which was 21 years ago at this point...kind of amazing.

It was Halloween, so all the kids dressed up in their costumes that day. I forget exactly what I was, some sort of vampire thing with a green mask.

Anyway, the teacher remarked that because I was so made up with the costume, she never would have guessed it was me had it not been for my distinctive walk. She said something like, "I'd never know it was you if it wasn't for the way you walk."

Up until that point, I wasn't aware that my gait was noticeably different from anyone else.

Yeah, I bounce when I walk- rather obviously. I think I spring off of my toes. Funny thing is my son (also on the spectrum) walks exactly like me.

Yes, I get bugged for my posture, my knocked knees, for walking too 'stiff', for tripping over nothing, etc. I feel like my body lumbers - I am far from graceful and really self conscious. I've been told to 'stop it' when I don't really know what I am doing - 'don't walk like that' - well, like what? I was called 'moose' as a awkward pre-teen and I still feel like a moose. I hate having people walk behind me, I get worse.

Mom used to correct my standing position when I was eight. She has also pointed out my other postures when I was a teen. I don't know if I still stand different or walk different.

I used to kind of slightly lean forward, and walk with very stiff knees... After someone made me notice it when I was twenty, I corrected it, looking at my myself (in mirrors and windows) while walking every time I could. At first, my muscles weren't used to that new posture, but after a while it became comfortable. Now it feels natural.

Not quite, although my parents will think I walk too awkward periodically.

I don't have a bad posture. I used to when I was a teenager, even my mum said. But I have managed to walk up straight now, keeping my hands by my sides. And I would know if I did walk funny because my mum would give me honest feedback. I trust my mum and she trusts me.

So the reason why people keep laughing at me in public is not because of my posture.....must be something else..... :?

I walk like a duck-footed caveman-penguin hybrid: slouched with the head angled down and slightly to the right, toes facing outward and slightly waddling due to my leg and joint issues. The odd thing is that everyone on my father's side of the family walks similar (sans waddling).

I'm very conscious of how I walk. I used to get picked on for walking like a duck. These days, I try to make sure my toes are facing forwards. Even so, every so often I'm asked how I injured myself. It seems I have some sort of limp. I know I must walk funny, especially as I'm forever kicking stones into my shoes, no matter how well they are tied.

If I don't think about it, I tend to plod or stomp. I saw my reflection in the automatic door of a store one day and realized how ungracefully I was lumbering along. As I got closer and closer to the door I managed to refine my stride by watching my reflection and noticing what my legs were doing. I often need to rely on external visual feedback like this.

I do have an unusual gait - I tend to sort of "lean forward" as I walk, mostly because my shoulders and neck tend to be "hunched over." Trying to straighten my posture feels awkward and unnatural to me.
