Have a kid, there's your pet.

Exactly. You can dress it up in dorky clothes, give it odd haircuts, put it in a stroller, carry it around, potty-train it, teach it how to speak and write. Later on, it can be taught how to work for the things they want. Eventaully the pet may beget a pet of their own and the cycle continues (maybe).
