Last Christmas, my parents got me a computer of my own so I wouldn't be using theirs too much. My parents use a Windows Vista computer (now currently with a failing graphics card that renders all PC games using the Source SDK engine unplayable). The computer I received is a used and severely downgraded Windows XP. Money is tight then and now. My XP computer can only successfully run games like emulator roms and PC games like Half Life 1 and its spin-offs. I've tried everything to get it to play my other games but I get this windows error sound and sometimes a blue screen during loading. The Windows Movie Maker on XP to edit my videos for YouTube is horrible and it is not compatible with AVI format. We downloaded what it needed for successful compatibility but it didn't do sh**. I try recording Emulators and it creates this terrible in-game lag. The only thing my XP is good for is internet browsing and Rom testing. My parents catch me doing recording on their computer and my dad is like "Do that sh** on your own d*** computer!" I try to tell him the limitations of my computer and he says "I don't care! Do it on your own computer!" I CURSE my REDNECK FATHER!! ! If he wants me to use my computer to do my YouTube projects then he should rip out his wallet and BUY ME SOME F***ING UPGRADES AND GRAPHICS CARDS or deal with it until we GET THE MONEY!! ! He's even threatening to delete all I have on the Vista computer. Then I'd have to close my YouTube account since I won't be able to continue with the videos anymore. I don't want it to come to that. I need upgrades but we don't have a lot of money.

Why can't you buy your own upgrades?
Your parents got you a computer, and all you can do is complain about how it's not good enough and they should give you MORE, MORE, MORE.

My parents take all my money because they feel they need it more than I do. I lost $3000 dollars for paying bills for utilities. No joke. I actually received $3000 (Don't ask how. That's private info.) My parents especially my dad should just deal with me doing what I want on their computer. I love my XP computer and I hate it too. It has so many limitations but at least I get more YouTube Video viewing and channel maintenance done in a day. I just wish my dad would stop being so stubborn about the things I do on his computer that I can't do on my own.

Uh yeah, you're 20 years old. None of this should be relevant or an issue unless you're severely handicapped.

Down to business - windows XP doesn't mean it's a weak computer - the processor, RAM, video card and hard drive will (especially if the drive is clogged full.

If you have no idea what your PC's specs are, hit the START button, choose RUN and type "DXDIAG"

Let me know what processor you have, how much RAM and the next page should show you what video card you have - share that too if you can.

If your desktop is some sort of name-brand thing, it might have a model number easily visible - that might also help me look up what your specs are.

When I know what you have, I'll tell you what upgrades are cheapest + best. If not, I'll suggest the least expensive upgrades possible for you...

With a budget of even a 200-300, I can tell you what'll perform best!

With my current motor skills there are things I can not do. I type using my index fingers only. I could never ride a bike so how could I drive a car? I have a very short attention span (thanks to ADHD) so I often space out even at the wrong times. The job market is picky VERY picky about hiring me so they reserve jobs for people who are better.

Model number, eh? I think this might be it. Not entirely sure though.

That number doesn't reveal much on Google. It's better to run the DXDIAG program mentioned before (Start -> Run -> type 'dxdiag'). Paste the output in this thread. There'll be a ton of output, most of it irrelevant, but we'll be able to work out what's inside the box from it.

The problem that you have has several parts.

1.) Your system is 9-10 years old. It's good for websurfing, office, music playback and very basic music editing.
2.) The fact that you are running XP on it limits you to older games due to the fact that XP will not run later games that use recent versions of DirectX.

This computer will not suffice for what you intend it to do.

Here's a solution. Keep this computer and use it for websurfing and music playback. Look for a company that specialises in buying and refurbing office/school computers, and look for a desktop system that has installed onto it is a 64 bit version of Win7 and has at least a Core 2 duo, or perhaps an I3 CPU. Ensure that the system has at least 2 GB RAM.

This will most likely run you about $300 or so. What you will most likely need to do though, at some point after getting the system, is get a more andvaced GPU card, and expand the memory to at least 4GB RAM. This will cost more, but you can replace this as you acquire more cash in the future.

Upgrades are out, the GX260 is old and it's already as good as it'll get, you can't re-use anything inside it. You're looking at a whole new system, so the best value would be a $300 system which includes Win7 (the brand new ones are including Windows8 which I don't like... Win7 models are clearing out now for some deals!)

Aim for something using an AMD A8 "APU" processor because it'll have decent quad-core CPU performance and built-in 3D graphics capable of playing some modern games at moderate settings (enough to be fun and nice to look at.)

Something like this: http://www.walmart.com/ip/Acer-Refurbished-Black-Aspire-AM3470G-UW10P-Desktop-PC-with-AMD-A6-3620-Quad-Core-Processor-4GB-Memory-500GB-Hard-Drive-and-Windows-7-Home-Premium/21097541
Shop around!

And if money's REALLY tight, I do some volunteer work at a buy & sell shop that regularly sells Core2Duo class machines for around $100. That along with a $75 video card will game very well. You're taking your chances on anything used though...
