I have had family members pass away and I have lost contact with friends before and other turmoils which I have been able to shrug of without a second thought which people question the sanity of. But earlier this week I lost my dog, he was the most beautiful amazing dog I knew and I am barley coping with his passing. The night I found out I was wondering what 16 sleeping pills would do. Even after moving away from my home and having to leave him behind he was the reason I went back home to visit. He was my companion throughout my childhood years where I was hated and he was my companion when I went nightwalking. Sharing macca's, running through the night at top speed and even the occasional having to protect each other from a someone trying to mug me. When he injured himself I carried him 3 kilometers home. I'm sorry I am not looking for help or such but I just needed to post somewhere where I hope some people can understand me better. My family and friends and such just are seeing him as a pet and think it's nothing, which is disrespecting his memory.

I can empatize with you; I have lost dogs before, it's sad. When my dog Jake passed, I had a dream a couple of days later where a deer was chasing him ( he loved being chased),. I could tell in the dream he was having a good time. Just because your dog is not on the physical plane anymore doesn't mean the energy he was isn't somewhere else on another plane. I personally feel it is not disrespecful to get another dog.

Some of my closest relationships have been with my pets. I have lost a few and it's very painful. Last Christmas I put down my Siamese, Joel. I'd had him for 20 years and he'd gone through a lot of tough times with me. I still miss him.

I remember it was hard for me when I lost my hamster, Topo, after three years. He lived the long life, but in the end he had an ugly infection and had to be put down. Losing a dog must be many times worse than that :(

I understand what you're going through because I feel the same about my cats. They are my companions and make my life worth living. I can do without humans, but not without my beloved felines.

I understand what it is like. A lot of people think I am weird because I got so upset when my rabbit Jenifer (Jellybean-hence my nickname) passed away last year aged 8 1/2. She was my little friend who never judged me or treated me bad. It's been a year and a month since she died and now I have another bunny. I already had one when Jenifer died called Ralph, but he was lonely so I adopted a little doe for him to be friends with. I actually think Jenifer helped me find Lorenne (the doe) because I had originally gone to the shelter to look at a different rabbit but that one had gone. Don't rush your grief, it is perfectly normal whether animal or human has triggered it. Don't let anyone tell you it is wrong or abnormal. You'll know when you are ready for another companion, don't rush that either.

It's hard to lose someone who meant so much to you, who accepted you as you are and protected you. I'm glad you got to have a friend like that for as long as you did.

I still miss my Zombie Woof, a half-Malamute, half-Golden Retriever, who had kidney failure back in 1993. I liked to hear his claws click on the hardwood floors. Sometimes when I take an old book off the shelf, I'll find some of his hair inside it (he shed massively, what with the Malamute undercoat).

I am very sorry to hear that your dog has died. I don't know what i'd do if I lost my dog or cats. Please don't let anyone make you believe you are abnormal for caring so much about your pet, sometimes animals can just reach us in ways that humans can't.
