Girls? Ladies? Women? Are any of the words demeaning or inappropriate ....?

Depends on how mature they are and how they look. If they are youthful looking or behave young I call them girl.
After a certain age it's always lady or woman. But these days referring to women in their 20's as girl is probably the most normal thing.

I don't really consider myself a girl, or a lady, or a woman for that matter. I'm just me. I guess "female" would work. Or as Fnord suggests "people". I'm a female person.

Women are people, even if you don't think so.

If they are older than you, Ma'am.

As in "Yes Ma'am" or "No Ma'am".

this statement doesn't make sense. What are you trying to articulate here?

Typos. I'll try it a totally different way. When thinking of a word, only consider females, not the males. I think everybody knows what I mean from the freaking subject header.

Woman- a generic term, appropriate in most circumstances, but there are some circumstances where it is better to use lady, which is more formal and polite
Lady- more formal and polite; more romantic, if you are using it in a romantic context
Girl- very informal, used only when referring to woman your age or younger. Many people refer to their close friends as "girls." Even my mother, who is 50, occasionally calls her 50-year-old friends "girl," but I would never call them girl because they are older than me.
If you are a man, you should probably not refer to a woman as a "girl," unless you are gay or she is young enough to be your granddaughter (even then you might want to be careful). If a man refers to a woman as a "girl," most people will assume that either (a) he is gay or (b) he is being rude and talking down to her.
