So I posted on my facebook how I am trying that five minute thing with my son to get him to go to bed and how I have to be strong by ignoring his cries for five minutes before going back in there again. One of my online friends told me to get some ducktape and that shocked me. Really? Duct tape? I don't know if he was joking or not but at least I have enough common sense to know to not take that advice.

Maybe he meant duct tape for you? You know, to tape yourself to your chair so you can wait the 5 min.?

Oh. Maybe a rope would do instead.

I'm sure it was a joke.

That's what other parents are telling me on Fetlife. I take things so darn seriously because I was shocked at the advice he gave me.

It was a joke. Duct tape is for taping ducts. Few people know its true purpose anymore however.

It works great to remove ticks, especially bunches of small ones,(seed ticks )most people carry a roll with them in the woods,it makes the tourists nervous to see locals with duct tape. They always think of Deliverance for some reason.

I have heard of removing cactus thorns that way as well.

I've used it to get the sticky residue from band-aids off of my skin.

And, I've also used it to remove hair from my arm, but that was an accident.

The person who suggested it was probably speaking from well within his RP persona. As a non sequitir, I've seen "duct tape craft kits" in a ToysRUs ad - several colors of short rolls for $10, when I saw that it made me think of an episode of "Extreme Makeover" where the team made a whole station in one of the sons' bedrooms to play with duct tape

My brother used to make things out of duct tape. He has made a had, shoe, a wallet out of it. I dunno if he still does it. I once read about a teen couple duct taping their toddler to a wall while high on meth. But yet I have seen another picture online of a baby duct tape to a wall and people find that hilarious while in the other one they were not amused. The doubt standard is the other baby didn't have the tape on its skin and the toddler did.

I know a guy that duct taped his 12 year old little brother to the wall (He was 16 at the time)..... Ive met them both and they get along with each other and all that.... /shrug. Not my kind of thing unless the person really wanted to be duct taped to something......

I asked him about it on IM and he said he was. Maybe if he had a smiley or a wink, I would have known. I just found out parents joke about child abuse all the time and tell their kids they will do this or that to them and I wonder the things my mother would threaten me with were all empty threats and she wouldn't actually do them. I believed her back then and thought for years she would have done it. But at least it kept me in line because she would scare me. I once didn't play with my brothers for the rest of the day because I was afraid what if they get upset with me again, then my grandfather would throw me out in the rain. He told me he would if I wouldn't stop upsetting my brothers. I was in my teens when I realized it was probbaly an empty threat and my mom would be mad at him if he actually did that. Plus I may have taken it too literal and he wouldn't have literally thrown me out, maybe like pushed me outside and lock the door and I be standing on the stoop that is covered. It was Wisconsin and it was summer so it wasn't hot out.
