BBC News

A UKIP candidate who called for an NHS review to look at compulsory abortion of foetuses with Down's syndrome or spina bifida has been suspended.

The party said Geoffrey Clark, who is standing for Kent County Council, would not be a UKIP councillor if elected.

Mr Clark said on his website he did not endorse the abortion idea but suggested it to cut the national debt.

When I heard about this, I was pretty disgusted if I'm honest with you. Vile man - hard eugenics in action. It reminds me of Nazism.

Good to see that the chap was suspended immediately and will no longer be a UKIP candidate. This is an absolute disgrace.

The party still has some way to go, I feel - there are still too many fruitloops in its ranks. Unfortunately, with experienced rising parties you get knobheads like this standing.

Disgusting. It should be the parents choice. Some people with spina bifida have it so mild that they have virtually no problems. Why should they be aborted? Of course, we probably don't know how disabled they will be.

Killing people with Down's syndrome and spina bifida to help reduce the national debt? Both can have a good quality of life, and their expenses are a drop in the bucket compared to importing a binch of people from the 3rd world who don't like you to come live off your welfare system.

At last a politician that honestly confess, that material and money counts more to them, then the life of the people they have sworn to work for.

A sensationalist headline- he didn't call for the abortion of foetuses with Downs (and certainly not the killing of people with those disabilities), just said it should be reviewed. There's a significant difference.

But yes, obviously such a policy would be disgusting, particularly if the decision is being made based on the financial burden these people are perceived to place on the country.

Currently impossible, because we don't know of any genetic cause for autism, let alone a prenatal test, but yes, that would be the logical next step.

In the future there will be a prenatal test for autism. The only question is when.

That is wrong on so many levels. That is the parents decision, and there isn't another human alive with the right to butt in to that decision.

He's been deselected as a candidate, suspended, and UKIP are looking into a legal way to kick him out of the party altogether.

Speaking as an autistic UKIP supporter.

I remember some people posting about a prenatal test a couple of months ago.

We have a new technique that could lead to prenatal tests for autism, but they're still a long way off. It isn't like Downs, which has an extremely obvious genetic cause.

UKIP also support a relaxation of the insanely strict gun laws that we have in Britain.
