Is there a link between AS and high pitched voices in women? I ask because Im 36 yrs old and I sound like a little girl. It never occurred to me that this could be why I sound this way until I recently. I have read that this can be true for men, but I havent seen this anywhere in regards to women. My voice is so child like that on several occasions I have heard, "put your mommy on the phone" or "is your mommy home?" This is when I even answer the phone or make phone calls because typically I avoid the phone unless there is a need.

I have never really had a negative experience about what others think about my voice (except those few times on the phone). Most of the time its just comments about how young I sound or how "cute" my voice is. Or that I should consider a job in voice over. But Im too embarrassed at the thought of recording my own voice lol..

I also have a high-pitched voice. I hate it. Had hoped that smoking would alter my voice in some way (unhealthy, I know), but that just hasn't happened yet.

I used to hate it... I guess I just accept it- to a point. The phone is extremely hard for me.

I am in my 60's and I still get "Can I speak to your parents" on the phone.

I thought I read somewhere on this forum that it is common for women on the spectrum have low/raspy voice. I have quite a low voice (which I hate), and I know a lot of NT women that have a high-pitched voice.

But since everything's related to Autism here, I can't be bothered to argue.

Yeah, I've always been estimated as much older due to my voice.

 It's funny, I had to record some work-related podcasts. Half of the comments were about how annoying my voice is, and the other half were comments about how I sound like a 'sexy librarian'. ( Shockingly enough, none of the comments were about the CONTENT of the statistics I was reporting on.) I've wished at time that my voice were a bit more pleasant, but, it's hardly the worst thing wrong with me.

I get everyone mistaking me for my mother on the phone -- even my mother's parents. People always think I sound very mature. I've always thought my voice is actually a bit lower than many other girls -- not in a masculine way, but just at that end of the spectrum. I'm told your voice sounds normally an octave or two lower to you when you speak -- something about the vibrations or something? Either way, that's me.

Just for the sake of reference, I am on the autism spectrum but more at the very, very mild end -- not even Asperger's -- and I was diagnosed.

I hope this helps! --I do find it very interesting how certain qualities are the default 'norm' for people on the spectrum and others are the default 'norm' for neurotypicals. I hope one day we understand the roots of these things -- why they coincide. :)

When I get stressed, my muscles gets crisped... in my neck too... so my voice gets higher and higher...

also from a lot of harassment for being weird... I adopted a sweet little voice to calm people. I kinda have a deep coarse one from low thyroid... maybe I try to mask it.

I get overstimulated easily... human interaction has too much information and demands... so it gets higher quick...

Enjoy~

I've got a low voice. People have mistaken me for a man. I would say that my voice is very soft, though. So if I sound like a man, it's an uncommonly soft-spoken one.

Hmm, I've got hypothyroidism, so maybe that leaves it's mark, too...

My voice makes me sound like a 10- year- old girl. But when I shriek, I sound like a 4-year- old girl -____-

 I was going to say I didn't have an especially high pitched voice, but I got "can I talk to your mommy" at 27, so I guess I sound young anyway, high pitched or no.

I am approaching my midtwenties, am told my voice sounds very young, one person specified a 13 year old. I can mimic the Jigglypuff song in Pokemon pretty well (to the astonishment of those who I have been brave enough to sing in front of), am thinking of the voice acting myself.

Lol when someone asks for my mummy in a sweet baby voice thinking I am much younger I am mortified

(I also am told I look 13-18, a good 5-10 years younger than my actual age)

I have read that "you are the age you look" and young looking people live longer. It would be awesome if the same happened for voice, we would live practically forever lol

Bear in mind that a woman's voice doesn't settle until she's in her thirties. I had singing lessons when I was a teenager, so I have very good control of my voice-I can pitch it to speak in front of a crowd with authority, or so that someone with a hearing aid can understand me, things like that. My speaking voice is in the alto range these days. When I sing I can cover tenor to soprano.

I look much younger than I am, sort of pixie-boyish, so my voice occasionally startles new acquaintances, because it's much deeper and more resonant than my appearence leads people to expect.
