What are your favorite indie songs/artists? Personally I really like Imagine Dragons, Walk the Moon, Grace Potter & The Nocturnals, Of Monsters and Men, and Star.f****r.

Post post post, I need new song recommendations :P

I can never really figure out exactly what indie means. People use the term to describe music with a certain sound rather than whether it is independently produced or distributed our not, which as far as I'm aware was its original meaning. But since most independent labels are owned by the majors nowadays even that definition has lost its meaning.

For example I would never call Of Monsters And Men indie. For one, they're signed on by Universal. Two, their sound is extremely pop, far moreso than their obvious influences Mumford and Sons or even Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros.

Below is my Spotify playlist for favorite songs of 2012 & 2013. Some are probably indie and some probably aren't.

I like this guy, and I think he is pretty much Indie Rock in both meanings of the word.

Yeah, absolutely. The album is chock full of catchy pop hooks, simple melodies and its hard to find a song on the album that doesn't by the songs end have a section where the lyrics are designed to be sung along to by massive crowds. Just about most of the songs could be released as a single, ready for radio. It's extremely trendy, featuring not only folk rock which has become fairly popular over the last couple years, but yet another boy girl duo. Thats about as pop as you can get in my opinion.

Not a boy girl duo. They are made up of 5 members. They are far more independent from the start. They were discovered by Kexp and filmed playing on one of their couches. Also they released their album independently in Iceland. If you want indie bands listen to Kexp.
