No, possession of an Imitation Firearm or a Realistic Imitation Firearm isn't illegal in itself, but carrying anything that looks like a gun in public isn't a good idea. Unless you're shooting out in the countryside, it's likely to get an armed response vehicle sent out to you!
It's an offence to possess an Imitation Firearm (Realistic or not) in public, and realistic replicas are banned altogether apart from people who are airsoft people playing on an insured site (and can prove it!), a reenactor, filmmaker or museum. It's also created an offence to manufacture, bring into or cause to be brought into Great Britain, or sell Realistic Imitation Firearms apart from the above exceptions.
