weird firefox cpu usage thing....

i realize i should post on stackoverflow, but i don't have an account

anyhoo, for ages i have spent re-writing my website and just recently i have noticed firefox using ~20% CPU when most other sites use less than 10%, sometimes even 0.3%. on the pages concerned, there is no flash, no banners, no ads, no pop-ups/unders etc, just text, graphics, css and javascript. my site is also standards compliant to both W3C and HTML Tidy standards.

i have tried disabling javascript and refreshing so that the script does not run, but still ff uses ~20% CPU, that said, wikipedia and wrong plant use 23% and 45% respectively.

i have adblocker and flashblock plugins, and about 13 tabs open (plus GIMP, VLC, iTunes on a pooter with 4GB RAM, 2.8GHz cpu), but there isn't anything being blocked from my site.

granted sites like facebook go to 140% (dual CPU) but they soon return to <10%. my site just sticks @ ~20%.

FF v 18.0.2 on Mac OSX v 10.6.8

could it be the fact i'm using CC3 dual backgrounds?

Firefox is cpu heavy for some reason including the thing it is known to do is memory leaks. I use a chrome based browser called comodo dragon and it uses lots of ram for each tab, but the cpu usage is under 5% right now and right now I have 4 tabs up and one is flash streaming.

Probably more FireFox than your site. Mine is using 40% CPU and not really doing anything at all. Welcome to Web 2.0! I wouldn't worry too much about it.

I've noticed that since Firefox went to a rolling release schedule from the 3.xx series, that it is now almost as CPU intensive as google Chrome, which really isn't a good thing AFAIK. (Currently using Iceweasel 18 on #! Linux.)

As far as alternatives are concerned, Opera seems to be moving in the direction of Firefox with the added bonus of the fact that it is also a memory hog when running multiple tabs. Other Browsers ( at least in the *NIX envireonment) such as epiphany and Midori will have issues with handling things like Flash and JS/Java and can be a bit tempermental.

It seems to be a Firefox thing, I've stopped using it since some months ago, and keep to either Chrome or IceWeasel 3.5, depending on the OS I'm using. I was in denial for several months, but in the end I had to accept the truth: Firefox is no longer the fast and reliable browser it used to be.
