Quote:
Today at the White House, President Obama unveiled the “BRAIN” Initiative—a bold new research effort to revolutionize our understanding of the human mind and uncover new ways to treat, prevent, and cure brain disorders like Alzheimer’s, schizophrenia, autism, epilepsy, and traumatic brain injury.

This could help pave the way not only Autism but other diseases too. Wonder what they will find.

Sounds exciting..they could also uncover what causes pedophilia, cannibalism, ect. and find a remedy for it (though most pedophilics don't have medical illness--their behavior is due environment and past experiences). Neurology is fascinating.

Do you think they could start with the GOP?

Maybe they can lend the UK a few quid to do the same!

Sounds like a tall order with only 100 million to spend.

Sounds cool at first glance, but I really question the government's true agenda with this. Somehow, I have a really hard time believing that the most powerful men in country are just such nice guys, who truly care about us 'commoners' that they want to spend millions of dollars to improving our quality of life with no direct benefit to themselves. I wonder why our government would be involved in neurobiology at all - what does this have to do with the game of politics?
Here is another quote...

Quote:
Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency: In FY 2014, DARPA plans to invest $50 million in a set of programs with the goal of understanding the dynamic functions of the brain and demonstrating breakthrough applications based on these insights. DARPA aims to develop a new set of tools to capture and process dynamic neural and synaptic activities. DARPA is interested in applications —such as a new generation of information processing systems and restoration mechanisms—that dramatically improve the way we diagnose and treat warfighters suffering from post-traumatic stress, brain injury, and memory loss. DARPA will engage a broad range of experts to explore the ethical, legal, and societal issues raised by advances in neurotechnology.

The fact that DARPA is involved at all concerns me. A new set of tools to capture and process dynamic neural and synaptic activities?? That, along with other language used in the above quote, concerns me greatly. I just needed to express my views on this publicly.

I am surprised that no one here is interested in the fact that it says one of the goals is to cure and prevent autism. Since people here seem so anti cure.

The government spends that in one hour and overhead will eat up most of it.

My first thought was eugenics, to be honest.

God money's not looking for the cure.
God money's not concerned with the sick amongst the pure.
God money let's go dancing on the backs of the bruised.
God money's not one to choose

Needless to say I do not like this.

I don't support that proposal at all. We all know what the president thinks about people with disabilities. That we're all a bunch of broken toys that need to be fixed. I'm not broken and I don't need to be fixed. The rest of the world also follows the most powerful country as well and the most powerful country seems to be the US these days.

I am getting confused, I thought the GOP had enough people with brain disorders, why do they need more?

Now if only the Australian government would do the same... Thankyou Mr Obama this will help scientists work out how much the human brain really works. I will be watching with interest when new things are found.

Why do assume that you are better at judging Mr Obama's thoughts than he is at judging yours?

Although I love learning about the brain, concordant with a previous poster, I worry about the social implications of how the government would use the information.
Also, I really think we should be working on reducing the massive deficit so that we can all continue to have affordable food on our tables and roof over our heads. The current economy is in terrible shape and I'm a stickler for living within a budget and believe the government should set the example and do the same. I do believe fending off the impulse to add more expensive programs is prudent until we are more fiscally flush as a nation.
