A long time ago Yahoo offered to upgrade Internet Explorer on my desktop computer.

Now when I open IE it's "Windows Internet Explorer provided by Yahoo!".

Thing is, while I can get to Wrong Planet, it won't let me log in. When I try, it diverts me to a Yahoo! search page, that shows WP as multiple results of a search I never made.

Upper right hand corner there's a question-
"Why Am I Here?"

If I click on that, I get a little window that says this-

"The page you requested cannot be found or is not available right now. This can be due to temporary connectivity issues or a misspelled URL. Please check the spelling or try again later.

"To disable Domain Advisor, uninstall Anti-phishing Domain Advisor (Powered by Panda Security) in your Control Panel -> Add/Remove Programs. Warning: This will also remove your anti-phishing protection against phishing and malware sites."

Don't tell me...

There's no such thing as "IE provided by Yahoo!", and somehow a virus got into my computer and corrupted my browser. Right?

How am I here now?

I'm using Google Chrome, which I hate the look of, but for now at least it works.

I exchange files between the desktop and laptop computers, but this Yahoo! IE thing has never shown up on the laptop.

Anyone got any ideas?

I considered uninstalling IE and then reinstalling it.

The "remove" option doesn't appear under IE when I get the computer's list of programs under "Add or Remove Programs".

I don't use Windows and if I did, I certainly wouldn't use IE. IMO your best bet would be to cut your losses and abandon it entirely - I suggest Firefox, but there are other good alternatives available.

I know a few people who have had the normal smooth operation of their machines umm, "hindered" by various corporate-related fiddlings over the years and my general advice is and has been to avoid any form of re-badged or customised offerings of software when that is available in its "natural" form because all too often, the tweaks are more trouble than they're worth.

Others here may have been caught by this same problem with the Yahoo-flavoured version of IE and have other solutions - hence the move to a different, more specific forum.

You can't fully uninstall IE as it's a part of Windows itself I think. I've never heard of a IE Yahoo! version, maybe it's one of those crappy toolbars that get installed with various other software if you forget to uncheck the box. Does it still cause this problem if you run IE without addons?

I don't know how to run it without add-ons.

I'll poke around and see what's doable.

Thanks for the ideas, guys.

Edit:
I'd posted this in the forum for discussing this website because maybe there was some hiccup. Just as happy to have it here with real computer people as the audience.

Webroot is THE WORST. I bought Webroot Spy Sweeper. Suddenly, I have Webroot Antivirus instead. And then it became Webroot Secure Anywhere, which not only kept bugging me to buy it, but which couldn't be uninstalled that I could see. Fortunately, I got a new computer, so the issue became moot. You may have downloaded something that changed your browser, or you may have some weird toolbar or addon. ("You" being the OP.) Corporations LOVE to worm their way onto people's systems. Watch out, your new version of Flash comes with a McAfee groper program that tries to get you to buy McAfee virus software. Don't look now, but your antivirus changed your search engine and homepage to WTFsearch.com and you can't undo it. I really don't care if Procter and Gamble comes out with a useless battery operated cartridge razor just to cross promote a battery line. But with software, they're obviously hoping you won't notice until it's too late. This is MY PC, and I really don't like some huge corporation deciding to modify it to suit THEIR needs without asking me! Windows is bad enough.

This pargraph tells you what you need to do. Panda Security is not part of windows remove it.

"To disable Domain Advisor, uninstall Anti-phishing Domain Advisor (Powered by Panda Security) in your Control Panel -> Add/Remove Programs. Warning: This will also remove your anti-phishing protection against phishing and malware sites."

Both Firefox and Google chrome have this protection on as the default. And they both will import your bookmarks. And if i remeber right even IE as of 8 has that no need for the third party bs.

This is Why I use Ninite They install things like Flash and Browsers without all the extra garbage I don't want like toolbars or anti virus from McAfee.

+1 what everybody else says.-- I happen to prefer Opera.

However, if you absolutely insist upon using IE, get rid of the Panda crap, and then go to the MS website, and get the latest version directly from MS.

Like I said, I'd uninstall IE and reinstall it...if I could.

When I try there's no "remove" button.

Even more interesting, I got Firefox this afternoon, and that won't even let me get to the mainpage. It also diverts to a Yahoo! search page that says the website doesn't exist, but then it lists a number of results from this site.

Clicking on them leads back to the Yahoo! search results page.

This computer is royally messed up.

But if I remove it from Yahoo's IE8, will that leave IE8 without it at all?

And what does it mean that the same problem (only worse) is also happening with a brand new installation of Firefox?

Once again I was only able to get here by way of Chrome.
