Past discussions discussing Aspie Communities, Aspie "Houses", Aspie Restaurants, and Aspie Festivals have showed that there is a base of support for some sort of tangible RL Aspie cultural location (links included below).

One reoccuring response has been that individuals would be interested in something along those lines, but perhaps not as a new residence right away. There are also numerous WPers who have conflicts with existing careers and/or family obligations.

There have been previous suggestions of some sort of "Aspie Resort". While many of these concepts were pure hypothetical concepts, the core idea is realistic.

If an Aspie resturant/cultural center was attached to some sort of limited motel or bed & breakfast, would Aspies want to visit such a location? For discussion purposes, assume such a location would have rooms, room cleaning, pool, transporation options, an Aspie Restaurant/cultural location, and be open at least a fixed portion of the year.

The closest I've seen to these ideas are the five autism-friendly hotels in the U.S. They were so-designated by The Center for Autism & Related Disabilities (CARD). Here's the link to one of the resorts in Florida.

Hmmm, I have to admit I'm not familar with those hotels.

In any event, I'm not aware of them having an Aspie cultural component.

I'd be very interested. That would be the ideal vacation for me. :)

Not that I think it's a bad idea, but in my case, the aspies I met in my life didn't like me better than the NTs. And except for one person, I didn't like them better than I like NTs either.

You mean I would get to sleep in a large library with free wi-fi? Possibly a 24 hr buffet as I can keep odd wake/sleep/eat hours.

I do like the idea of Spectrum-Friendly resorts.

However . . .

80% of new businesses fail (yes, 8 out of 10), typically because the fixed expenses eat you alive. I wish this was not the case, but that does seem to be the baseline statistic. And this needs to be understood going in.

My idea of the perfect Aspie resort would have:

- Soundproof walls everywhere and lots of sound-absorbent material/decor.
- Dimmable, warm lighting everywhere.
- Friendly dogs and cats to visit with/take out for a walk, horses to ride and groom.
- A large library with comfortable, private seating.
- One coffee shop/lounge for those who are open to socializing, one for those who are not (sort of like smoking/non smoking sections).
- Close access to a market
- Window treatments that actually block out /all/ outside light for those of us who can't sleep well if there are visual distractions.
- Room service/staff who have been educated not to be offended if the clients don't make small talk/chat/eye contact with them all the time.
- A choice of different sorts of sheets for bedding for people who are very touch sensitive
- Communication with room service/front desk via texting/messaging on the television, somehow, not only over the telephone.

I know these are probably impractical and expensive, but that's just my brainstorming.

I love the concept. I also love the concept of National Socialism... but we all know how that turned out. I am not saying the resort would end up burning its guests alive. But what I do think would happen is that because of the varying degree of needs, you'd end up with one of the worst groups of people to deal with you could imagine.

The requirements would be so vast and different. You'd also end up having issues with interaction of guests (some on off days, others not) and coming up with activities.

It's a great idea but personally I wouldn't go. I have a hard enough time dealing with run of the mill douchebags in a town of 180,000 let alone 450 people like me concentrated in one small place.

The text messaging part should be doable. I know there are places that effectively run room service by text, through I'm not sure on the details.
I personally have to draw every curtain and cover my eyes in most hotels, I completely agree with the outside light issue.
The point on the "coffee shop" would relate to the Aspie Resturaunt concept.

What I find interesting here is that with a few exceptions, most of these items are not unreasable.

Erm no, I don't think so. Aspies are as isolated here as anywhere else. Maybe you mean the kibbutz, that doesn't exist anymore.

I hate that about staff. They always ask you what school do you go to and do you like it and then then when you say nothing more than the name and yes (because I can't think of what else to say) then they look at you like your weird.

Agreed. You either mesh with people or you don't, and I don't believe the Aspie/NT factor has anything to do with it.

Unfortunately, the verbosity, the obliviousness to others' needs, the egocentrism, which I suppose is a part of what people don't like in me, I don't like it in other aspies either. And they don't like it in me. What I did love about them was the lack of social pressure and the missing constant calculating of non-aspies.
