Who do you use for references if looking for a new job? Especially if you don't want your current boss to know you are looking?

It's common to put "references available upon request."

That way your references only get contacted if you are a finalist.

i agree with this.

also... there are some industries where your work can speak for itself (not 100% but a lot of it), especially in the tech field.

I asked a classmate of mine this same question, and she said she got most of her jobs because she listed her friends as references and they would blow smoke and pretend they worked with her previously. I thought that was hilarious. It's terrible advice, so don't take it, but I thought it was pretty funny.

I called a guy's references once and the reference said "He thinks he knows a lot more than he does."

Needless to say, not hired.
