Studies of social animals has shown how important misfits are for critical tasks among ants and caterpillars. Social animals tend to "follow the leader" which of course means that the leader has to be a misfit who can actually find new pathways to food and other resources. Otherwise the colony would die walking in circles. Sounds familiar?
