I've noticed quite a bit lately when I post and I hit "submit", the attempt that IE makes to load the "your post has been succsessfuly submitted" page will timeout, and IE will just display it's standard stop-gap "Page cannot be displayed" error message, even though the post made it onto the site.

Is this common for other members too, or is this just me?

I haven't noticed this problem, but I use Mozilla which has a rather long timeout. Recently it does take sometimes quite a long while before the "submitted" message appears. This problem may be the cause of many duplicate posts appearing recently.
