Do you see an endocrinologist? With PCOS, it is important that you find a specialist that can help you manage it. I have been on metformin for 3 years now, and it has helped me immensely. Some people can have problems with it, but it helps most people. There are other meds they can try as well. A regular physician is often not familiar enough with all the different treatments for PCOS.

If you are interested in reading up on what you can do for yourself in conjunction to working with a doctor, try reading THE HORMONE CURE, by Dr. Sara Gottfried, and WOMANCODE: PERFECT YOUR CYCLE, AMPLIFY YOUR FERTILITY, SUPERCHARGE YOUR SEX DRIVE, AND BECOME A POWER SOURCE by Alisa Vitti.

Both struggled with and overcame hormonal issues, both work with women to overcome their hormonal issues, and both books have really good information about interventions you can do yourself (dietary changes, supplements, etc.) and also good tests to ask for from your doctor. Using information from these books, I've shortened my cycle from 45 days to 33 (my goal is 28 days like clockwork), have almost no PMS symptoms, and very minor cramping.

Good luck!
