as somebody who has been whipped, punched, slapped, kicked, shoved down to the ground etc., spanking is relatively mild.

There are plenty of ways of disciplining kids without hitting them. Fear is not the same as respect.

-1 from me, and I'm American. We can discern the difference between fear and respect, it's just you tend to respect something you fear.

I respect the ones that are respectable, but I only can feel fear for the ones who are fearsome. I do not mix the two categories of people together.

I think it depends on various factors like how old the kid is, why he/she was spanked & how hard it was. In general I think hitting a kid is wrong especially when it's hard. But there are some real defiant kids who regular punishments don't work on. They get their toys, TV & video-games taken away as well as no desert & they refuse to do the chores that are part of their punishment because they know that their parents or caretaker has no real power over them. In those cases I think corporal punishment my be warranted like a light spank especially when the kid does something realty bad but if the kids are abit older I think the parents should be sending the kids to some kind of psych instead of giving them an asswhoppin or maybe even sent to a boot-camp/military school if the kid is really out of control. I feel sorry for parents sometimes because when their kids are throwing a tantrum or acting wild in public others get upset & want the parents to make their kids be quiet & behave but when the parents do something like spank which is about the only punishment they can give when they are out with their kids others may think the parent is abusive.

I was never bothered by the pain part, just very agitated by the fact that I had broken another one of the 'unwritten rules' again - that used to upset me more than the pain. There were so many situations where I was punished, both at home, grandparents, school etc. It was everywhere, so it became 'normal'. The worse part was not knowing why, why have 'unwritten rules'? NT's are crazy sometimes! It stopped when my father tried to hit me as a teenager and I put him on his arse with a right hook - he never raised his hand again and I left very shortly afterwards. I have a high pain threshold now though.

I never raised my hand to my children, just used a warning card system - two yellow cards and you get a red; a red card was sent to their room to calm down - and they have both grown up with a healthy respect for discipline, but they are rational and reasoning individuals too. One of the few things I am proud of in my life.
