With tiny babies I recognize "hungry"---"Ng--aaa, Ng--aa". All 4 of my babies used the same cry for this, and I have heard it from other babies out in public, too.
None of my babies ever cried for a diaper change--they didn't care. (My aspie son didn't care even when he was 3.5, and was potty trained by making NOT using the bathroom take longer/more time away from his activity--usually toy cars/vehicles at that age-- than using the bathroom.) I just changed their diapers when I noticed they were wet or messy.
For everything else (too hot, too cold, need to burp, want to be held, clothes are uncomfortable, older baby hungry, tired and need to sleep, etc) I just went through trial and error experimenting until I found something that worked.
