I have a suggestion for better dealing with spammers/attackers. How about adding buttons on each post similar to the ones on craigslist so users can flag the post as miscategorized, offensive, spam or whatever. And have this flag alert the mods who would then deal with the flagged post(s).

Just an idea I thought I would throw out.

I know on other sites like Digg some of my post have got Digged down so I'm someone reluctant to give the mob a vote like that.

It might work if it then displays who flagged the post so people don't go around flaging things that they shouldn't. I do aggree that there should be a quick way to notify the mods of a troll.
