I feel awful for liking anime...
I love and respect this fellow from my childhood (preschool times) and I don't see it meaning anything as he's no longer with us but after watching this, hearing him detest "all the violence" on TV...and I'm watching Hunter x Hunter or remember all those Pokemon/Digimon/Yugioh/Rurouni Kenshin/YYH/Naruto/DBZ/One Piece/Bleach/eventually stuff like Death Note all that 4th grade stuff (except PKMN thats like 2nd grade) I grew up with and reminisce upon fondly...and then I think "What would Mr. Rogers do?"

Why would you be ashamed of that? Anime is great. I am 26 and I enjoy Anime a lot. Besides that, it is TRUE not all anime is for kids. Elfen Lied or Death Note are just two examples. Right now I am watching Monster, an anime about a surgeon that is chasing a serial killer, not exactly kid's material. If somebody makes you feel bad about it, just tell them to go eff themselves, because there's nothing wrong in liking anime.
[edit]
And about the violence in anime... violence in media is widrespread and generally only videogames and anime are attacked for it. (With the occasional tabloid and/or movie) Blaming media violence for real violence is just a way to put the blame on something rather that seeing what caused the real trouble.
At least, with a lot of the things you listed, the characters are out in search of a better world. Violence isn't their end goal, they want peace.
Rurouni Kenshin is about a samurai who doesn't want to hurt even his enemies. In Naruto, the ninja villages learn to work together instead of fight each other.
