There have been a few job scams in the UK lately. Some people were asked to pay money upfront for a criminal check against them, so a bunch of people paid £65 to a man who'd interviewed them and told them they had got the job. Then he disappeared with their money. He has been arrested now but I think that is a really bad thing to do when people are desperate to find a job.

I think I was nearly scammed recently. I got an interview invite out of the blue via a company called Staffbook. They had set me up with an interview and the only details they gave me were the date and time and a postcode. They didn't even say who the company was. So i declined.

How are we supposed to know which are the real jobs and which are not? It seems most jobs advertised online are fake.

Has anyone thought they had been scammed, or attempted to be scammed?

There is a very easy way to tell the jobs are scams. They promise you'll be paid a ton of money while only working part-time without experience, and of course they don't tell you the name of the company. I have many times gotten scam emails that I knew were fakes. The bottom line is no one is going to hand anyone a job that pays a ton of money to an unproven applicant. If they were actually real, don't you think everyone would be working those jobs? Who wouldn't want to work part time and make $5000 a month. Not even in your dreams. Want a good job? Work many years for a real company and earn it like the rest of us. There are no short cuts. I think I'll post two scam examples.

Ex 1:

We are happy to inform that you have successfully passed the preliminary selection among the applicants on www.СareerBuilder.com.

Our company has reviewed your resume and would like to offer you a position with our company as a Credit Manager. We strongly believe that your knowledge, skills and experience will be an asset to our company.

Job Title: Credit Manager
Salary: $5,600 per month
Hours: Part-time (Monday-Friday)
Location: United States

Requirements:

- MS Office (Word) - basic knowledge
- Internet access and e-mail
- A sufficient level of work ethics
- Ability to learn fast and perform tasks in a timely fashion
- U.S. resident or green card holder
- You are not required to quit your current job.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

- Assist in company’s financial business.
- Perform financial tasks.
- Make reports.

Ex 2:

I am a HR Assistant with a big increasing company and I have found your resume on CareerBuilder.

I am interested in talking to you about a rare and real opportunity.

Hours: 14 per week

Why do you use Careerbuilder as the jobsite? Are all their jobs scams?

The UK government website Universal Jobmatch is full of fake jobs and scams too

CareerBuilder is a lot like Monster.com. It doesn't hurt to get your name out there. I used CareerBuilder because there are some positions that are real. The main difference is real jobs on the CareerBuilder are posted on the website and you need to actually apply for them yourself. These scam jobs are not listed on the website and these scammers will email you out of the blue. You know that these jobs are bad when they are the ones contacting you instead of you contacting them. They only send emails so thankfully I just have them go right into my spam folder. But again, you know a job is a scam when you don't know what company it is and they promise a very easy job for a lot of money.
