I have had various counselling and psychotherapy experiences over the years. MOstly not that helpful. It seems as if it is easier to get counselling and some kind of support for Aspergers (if you are motivated to go and get it) if you live in the US. sorry that was a long sentence! the first counsellor I had was lovely but moved back to the US after six weeks of counselling due to her husband going over there. She recommended this woman who never saw that I had aspergers. I didnt know that i had it then. I was frustrated many times from that counselling and I think it made me worse. She was also very frustrated with me and I think I also made her worse!! ! After I left that counselling I ended up getting a diagnosis of Aspergers and wrote and told her and she flatly denied that I could have such a syndrome. not good. How can i get help in the UK. Where would you recommend that I go. The last two contacts that I had with therapists they both said I cant see that you have aspergers and also said I dont work with labels which is all very well but at the end of the day I still have AS and all the manyfold problems that go with it and I am still alone and struggling. There is an Aspergers specialist in the city that i live in but she charges £50 per session and I cant afford that. hmmm Idk. Any Thoughts gratefully received???

Sorry, I can't offer any help in that area - I've never been to a counselor and I'm trying to decide now if I should go to one. From what I've read here, it's a crap shoot as to whether or not it will be a waste of time.

I will wish you Good Luck, though.
Cheers!

Are there support groups in your area? If not there are always online support groups for people with High Functioning Autism/Aspergers.

Hi Miss Q I agree that it might well be a crap shot and a waste of time. I do think that first long term psych was an experience that would best not have happened. I think the issue is finding someone who has experience and understanding of people with HFA and how it can differ in men or women. I find that peeps are happy to see that a man has AS but if as a woman i say i have it they dont agree. Also as a counsellor if someone doesnt understand they can only help you by NT veiwpoint as that is the only other if they are not aware of the true characteristics of a woman with AS. hmmm tricky. I too would be interested in online support groups. Miss Q perhaps AsPartOfMe means online groups like wrong planet and you dont look sick site. Thanks for your contributions.
