Here is a question from my evil mind  what is the saddest song you have ever heard?

"Nothing Compare To You" by Sinead O'Connor. I remember this woman who once came to my apartment. She used to play this song over and over while crying crocodile tears. It was a sight to see.

Not sure what *the* saddest song I've ever heard was, but this is definitely up there.

This is pretty sad as well. I actually have a hard time listening to this without breaking into tears sometimes.

Don't let the fact that this is a Metallica track fool you. It is most definitely a tearjerker.

This is the saddest excuse of a song I've ever heard.

Adagio for strings. When words fail, nothing speaks from the soul like violins.

I tried to get the video to post but all I could manage was the link :P

To me Bethena A Concert Waltz is more haunting than sad, but it's still sad. Once I researched the background of this piece by Joplin and learned why it was written and why it sounds the way it is, I realized this piece is incredibly sad.

A close second is Komm Susser Todd from NGE. When you listen to it, it almost seems the song is quite happy, but then you hear the lyrics and it is anything but a happy song.

Basically the main song that can be played at any funeral. It brings me to tears every time.

When I was a kid, 'Puff the Magic Dragon' would mess me up something awful in a way I couldn't then understand. Probably still could - I daren't give it a try.

I think 'Elizabeth, You Were Born To Play That Part' by Ryan Adams is probably it. By all/his accounts, it's from the perspective of a woman to her stillborn baby. The music and his voice (and the words) when he sings 'Wherever you are, I hope you're happy now/I'm caught in a dream and can't get out' generally gets me welling up. The song is in two parts - indeed, halves. Piano and voice, and then fading into a fuller instrumental.

-----

For you I'd do anything
Tear myself in two
Just to hear you breathe

Calculate the changes that in time
Turn to nothing and then multiply
Yourself by my pain

Over you is where I stand
I wish I knew why
But I don't understand

I'm waiting on someone that just won't show
And every night it seems like there's no tomorrow
Not that you will ever know

Wherever you are, I hope you're happy now
I'm caught in a dream and I can't get out
I'm caught in a dream
I'm caught in an endless dream

Wherever you are, I hope you're happy now
I'm caught in a dream and I can't get out
I'm caught in an endless dream
And I'm not strong enough to let you go

And I have tried everything
But that
Elizabeth

Do I have to be limited to just one?

1.) Mahler - Kindertotenlieder. This translates basically to "Songs on the death of children", not much explanation needed there.

2.) Gorecki - Symphony 3 ("Symphony of Sorrowful songs"). The first movement is my favorite, but the second is probably the saddest (particularly when sung in a setting such as in the following video). The words for the song came from a poem etched on the wall of a concentration camp cell.

One of the first thrash metal ballads ever recorded, and a pretty sad one at that, being about suicide. Apparently Metallica got letters from a bunch of depressed kids back in the 80s thanking them for writing this song, as it helped them deal with their suicidal thoughts.

I'm actually kind of surprised I was the first person here to post this. Am I the only person who immediately thinks of Metallica when it comes to emotionally-charged songs?

Probably, thrash metal isn't exactly known for it's emotional depth. I'd think more of Nine Inch Nails or Tool.
