The first time I saw this film I didn't like it at all. I thought it jumped around too much, it didn't make sense, and it didn't fit the "traditional" flow of movies. After I saw it for the 2nd time, I thought it was the best thing since sliced bread. I really thought it was so fantastic and original that it was bound to change the face of movie storytelling and screenwriting as we know it.
I lived briefly in Hollywood. I went there because I wanted to write movies. So convinced I was of Tarantino's influence that one movie I wrote, Iron Maiden, followed a similar style of non-sequential writing. Some of the old-school script writers in Hollywood didn't like it. They questioned it's non-linear narrative. I told them because it was of Pulp Fiction that I did that. They weren't buying it.
Anyway, I still think it's one of the most original and best films ever made. I can practically recite every line by heart even though I haven't seen it in a while. I remember it as well as I remember my two favourite films, Beauty & the Beast and Amadeus.
I don't know or understand all the Intricacies, nuances and complexities of story flow and script writing, I just know that this is one of very few movies I can sit down and watch from beginning to end any time I can catch it on the tube. Considering that I despise violence and the gratuitous use of guns in movies,AND profanity, I think that is something. This movie, to me, is true art in cinema.
