I think every politician who votes for this should have to take a turn at being the executioner, with their spouse, children and grandchildren in the gallery witnessing the execution. They have such a lust for this stuff, let it permeate the dreams of their family members for a few lifetimes.

in America, "cruel and unusual" has a ragged edge where the right wingers like to dwell more often than not.

Right wing extremists in America are sadomasochists. They take particular pleasure in watching people suffer emotionally. They think human suffering is funny.

right wingers see life as a comedy and a war, while left wingers see it as a tragedy and a rescue mission.

I think I saw a news report last night about one state in the US bringing back the firing squad as a method of execution.

Call me cruel, but some people deserve it and I think punishments for criminals should be a lot harsher in general. (especially here in the Netherlands)

To give you an example;

Yesterday a well known "professional" gangster got shot and killed by criminal rivals and the news report said the following;

He was sentenced to jail for 7 years in 2008 for <insert long list of criminal charges ranging from forcing women into prostitution, drug trade, assault, attempted murder, etc, etc, etc> (which is a joke sentence if you ask me)
He escaped from the prison in 2010 and stayed a fugitive till December 2013 when he survived an attempt on his life but the police gave him protection instead of arresting him (big joke since he should have technically still be in prison), then in April of this year he got arrested for having two guns in his car, but apparently he was already out again (another big joke) because they shot and killed him yesterday. (that actually made me laugh).

Well, the firing squad is more humane than a lethal injection - or electric chair - but the best method of executing someone is hanging. Clean, cheap, and if done correctly, quick and painless. I don't know why it's not standard. Perhaps because it isn't as clinical and detached as lethal injection, and so people might be less inclined to perform it?

I don't get why they don't just switch to nitrogen asphyxiation as a primary execution method instead. There's no shortage of nitrogen; plus it would be a easier and more humane method of execution than lethal injection. The only downside is that it would probably become more popular as a suicide method, and that people would become more afraid of dying when using nitrogen as an anesthetic.

How is asphyxiation a less painful alternative? And is nitrogen easy enough to get access to to make it a popular method of suicide?

Personally I think all forms of execution are inhumane. There is no humane way of taking another person's life. And, as far as I know, executing a person is more expensive than keeping the same person in prison for the rest of his life.

I think the problem is that USA is trying to fix the problem of crime temporarily by shoving everyone into prisons. Instead of actually giving people better and more affordable education and better welfare arrangements so that less people have to resort to crime to survive.

It's less painful because they just feel like they're breathing normally until they get light-headed and pass out. It's the same thing as using nitrogen as an anesthetic during surgery, except they don't take the mask off until the person is dead. They already have these nitrogen asphyxiation devices called exit bags in Australia that some people use to commit suicide. Some people make homemade ones, but they have a lower success rate. Nitrogen asphyxiation is widely considered the least painful way possible to die, followed by suicide pills.

Ahh, of course, I should have known that. Then I do agree it would be a better alternative. But I still think they should put more effort into preventing crime by giving people another option than to create new ways of killing people.

No one gets executed for stealing because they needed to feed their children but couldn't find a job because of schooling/economic crisis. :/

Axe murder some 92 year old defenceless WW2 veteran because you needed to kill someone to become a full member of "the gang", or kidnap, rape, strangle and mutilate an 8 year old girl, you don't deserve to be on this planet. And if it were up to me, we'd look for the most and longest, not least and quickest, painful way of removing those people.

Don't get me wrong, I agree a lot of people in jail shouldn't/wouldn't have been there if the world had been a "better" place, but there's crime and then there's CRIME.

I do agree that serious crime without a valid reason should result in a long sentence. But you often see that giving people an education and something to do means people are less likely to join banks, rob other people, smuggle drugs etc..

Someone who "needs" to kill should get psychiatric treatment, maybe combined with a long sentence. Putting them in prison is probably a bad idea as they would probably act out against other inmates and just build up hate.

"we should look for the most and longest, not least and quickest, painful way of removing these people" Are you saying people should be tortured to death? This would be less humanistic, more expensive, and could cause severe physical problems to everyone involved.

From the article:

Quote:
Republican Gov. Bill Haslam signed a bill into law Thursday allowing the state to electrocute death row inmates in the event prisons are unable to obtain the drugs, which have become more and more scarce following a European-led boycott of drug sales for executions.

Makes sense to me. I always find it disturbing in a fascinating kind of way that liberals identify and sympathize more with the murderers than the victims and their families. :?

it is NOT painless. there have been reports of survivors who said it was the worst pain they ever felt. a better method would be a double-barreled open-choke shotgun blast using double-00 buckshot through the head at high speed, as the brain [and the head and neck] would be gone straightaway so no possibility of pain perception.

Good, when I hear the left complaining about how it's somehow inhumane to execute a convicted murderer, I wonder if they think about the victim(s) who were not able to attend the trial?

I see a solution here for those who "need" to but looked for help before they acted, and those who didn't and deserve to be punished.

Therapeutic executions.. hmm... win/win?
