This makes no sense. Roger decided to go to UCSB because he saw it in a film about kidnapping and murder, therefore his perception of reality was off? Maybe he was simply able to differentiate between the plot of a movie and the setting.

And then, assuming his perception of reality was off, it's therefore unreasonable to suspect that privilege and entitlement motivated his actions? Can't a person have skewed perceptions and simultaneously be privileged and entitled, and be motivated by all three to go on a shooting spree?

I think this cinches it, the guy was stark raving insane - as if mass murder didn't tell us that already.
