Hi there

I haven't posted anything on here for MONTHS but I'd really appreciate an opinion on this if anyone has one.

I went to the doctors today and found out quite by accident that my ears "need" syringing. I didn't give it any more thought til I got home and then decided to look it up on the 'net.

It seems a small number of people who get their ears syringed go deaf or develop tinnitus afterwards and suddenly I don't think I want my ears syringed. see, music is my LIFE and no amount of compensation money would ever make up for losing my hearing.

Anyway I just wondered what people think about it?

You can do candling with beeswax ear candles (I've done it), although a lot of doctors think it's a bunch of baloney.

I am prone to swimmer's ear. My doc says the best bet is to just let a little water run in your ears while you're washing your hair, and to make sure you rinse it out.

That's usually enough to clean stuff out over time.

Of course, you may need an initial ear cleaning, which you can do yourself.

Take a little warm water and a capful of hydrogen peroxide, and pour a little in your ear, let it sit there a little bit, and then tilt your head the other way to drain, and then take the syringe and GENTLY squirt some more of the warm water/peroxide solution into your ear while your ear is in the drain position.

It's pretty amazing what's back behind the wax. Ew.

If you don't want to, then don't. Get the best out of life. You don't want Tinnitus, so don't get your ears syringed. Also, I officially second indigoiis' advice. It works.

I would be very wary of indigoiis's advice about syringing your ear yourself.
(He did capitalize the word GENTLY - this cannot be stressed enough.)

I am prone to ear-infections; previously when i thought it needed syringing i perforated my ear-drum trying to perform 'self-syringing', when in fact my ear had an infection.
Besides it being very painful; music is also my life and there was a time i thought i had caused myself permanent damage.

I suspect your doctor has advised using olive-oil drops. In the past a few days using these has removed any blockage before syringing was required. Keep using these ( fill your ear-canal with it overnight & stick some coton wool in.) Do not poke anything down your ear; it will make it worse by impacting the blockage worse and pushing it down onto your ear drum.

The equipment used for syringing should be quite adequate nowadays. They (should) know exactly what pressure they are squirting in and what is safe. If it still needs syringing after using olive-oil drops for 5 days, then go get it done.

I suggest speaking to your doctor/nurse beforehand about your misapprehensions. S/he should be able to show you the equipment and put you more at ease about the safety. If they are unable to do this, then go see a specialist.

DO NOT STICK ANYTHING DOWN YOUR EAR.
