A short time before my 33rd birthday (mar 31st)
I was doing a search for Autism related news and came to the conclusion it's a sad state of the times we're in when one looks up the term(s) "Autism" "Autistic" and/or "Aspergers" and A.Lanza's name pop's up. As if to say Autism and/or Aspergers disorder was the link or driving force behind the horrific events of 12/14/12 despite the FACT there has been no link connecting ASD to these horrific acts of violence in fact it's the opposite those whom are on the Autism Spectrum are more often to be victims of bullying whither physically, verbally or emotionally.

Just the other night through the course of conversation a family member made a joke that I have "A. Lanza disease", While it is true I do have Autism I also know the person was only joking but the thought popped in my head... I truly wonder how many people out there whom won't know any better or those with an agenda will find a way to link what that numbnuts did to the Autism/Aspergers community to further demonize & stigmatize those whom are on the Autism Spectrum and make life even more harder then it is already.

I know it's human nature for people to grasp straws to have an answer as to why these these tragic things happen but why Autism/Aspergers why not Schizophrenia MPD or even Bipolar why do people always jump to say oh it's Autism

Just some late night thoughts...

Often people say "Oh I was only joking" to either conceal underlying hostility (which they were expressing in the nasty remark) or to cover their embarrassment when they suddenly realise they have said something really dumb and totally inappropriate (foot in mouth syndrome).

You will be best placed to know which applies in this case.

before autism-more specificaly aspergers was known well, they were throwing out schizophrenia as the default diagnosis for every big crim out there.
the schizophrenic community were rightly pssed off seeing as only a small minority with it had done such acts.

everyone relates to adam lanza in that we are all human so why dont people pick on the fact he is human instead of focusing on aspergers,or coud it be because they dont want to be associated with him either and just want something to blame and hold responsible?
being human means anything can happen so why not focus on that?
having aspergers or any other form of autism simply means nothing;it doesnt make someone more likely to kill, it just gives someone a set of challenges they have to work around in society.
it is other variables combined together such as mental illness, long term isolation, abuse, bullying, poor upbringing, dysfunctional family life, already existing forensic behaviors, impulsive behavior, never treated severe personality disorders etc that probably make someone on the spectrum kill.

I have never heard anyone connect autism to massmurder. I really dont think that is the image people associate with autism. Actually, im pretty sure of it...

Dude....Thats just not true? Thats not true. Where did you even get that from? People stigmatize mental illness and connect it to violent crimes, MUCH MUCH MUCH more than they do with neurological disorders such as autism. Mental illness is much more often blamed as the reason someone did something horrible, than autism is.

Because society and the sensationalist media needs a scapegoat..

Its not the murderers thats making those statements, its the mass media and government/corporate people whom is trying to upset people enough to get odd or other bills to pass. and most of the people are sheep enough to give them what they want. they cant force people to agree to something, so they sheeple them into thinking they want it.

I wonder if they (media) knows what type of danger that may put us in because those whom are uneducated enough may think oh that boy over there has what they call the aspergers I better watch him so he doesn't kill me or my family trust me i've seen a lot of misguided people/uneducated people and the more these outlets link AS/ASD to these mass murders/shooting the more those people will think it's the truth that we are somehow natural born killers.

They know, because they report on the impact when it becomes newsworthy, but they don't care.

I remember the early days of popular awareness of AIDS. The reporting was terrible and fueled the magical thinking typical of large segments of the public. People thought victims were being directly punished by god and there was some risk of contagion merely from having one of the insta-damned in the neighborhood, because tolerance could lead to divine judgment. People thought that objects might somehow be carrying the mystery plague because people with Aids had once been in contact with those objects.

People are not rational, for the most part. Things that scare them, like mass murder, bring that out.
