I am new here and i would like to ask a question i have occasionally pondered over the years i was diagnosed with aspergers at the age of 16 shortly after becoming a black belt in tae kwon do since then i have always been fascinated with martial arts and i even became a licensed massage therapist in the state of hawaii and studied other styles of martial arts but is it natural for other aspies to enjoy these things? I have always been physically talented and the mechanical movements of forms and techniques came more natural to me than anything else. They gave me understanding in other things as well. I was bullied a lot in school because of my social deficiency but i always had the comfort that if it became absolutely necessary i could win a fight. Even so i only fought back twice in the years since then for fear of the consequences of what i could do. Now as an adult that fear has moltiplied as my skills have sharpened does anyone else feel this way?

I am interested in martial arts.
Learning some helped my self confidence, and helped me be less afraid of being victimized by bullies.
I also like the health and strength benefits from the exercise.

I am currently a red belt in taekwondo. It has helped my self esteem and confidence, and taught me some discipline. I also do taekwondo to keep in shape. I have also made some great friends there!!

yes i feel like this i don't hold any belts but nonetheless i am skilled in martial arts i too fear knowing how easy it is to hurt or kill someone plus i cant really tell the difference from social or asocial violence to me it all feels the same and i tend to retaliate with extreme force regardless of the situation the social deficits play a bit part even in training ive had to leave an mma gym once as people at it use to try and hurt me as id use "traditional stuff" as they'd say and beat them in sparring like the 1st time i went in i won a few rounds and they didnt like that the "new" guy was winning i left after a week as one of the big guys broke one of my ribs with an Do-jime /Scorpion Crush and just laughed about it

i took karate at a YMCA for a short while back in elementary (exactly when i don't remember). later i took 3 years of aikido, which i liked better. it was at a slower pace, better for clumsy me.

Seems like a super-common question around here and yeah, tons apparently.

I'm about 5 1/2 years into an integrated blend of Filipino and Southern Chinese styles. Best way to explain it is it's really a permutation of the Dan Inosanto blend albeit we have a bit more Kuntao focus than the Silat but in general we have a lot of Kali, Arnis, Panantukan, Wing Chun, Chin Na, etc. rolled together with some limited Jiu Jitsu that's more situational awareness of ground game than getting wrapped up in it too much. We work with stick, knife, palmsticks, empty hands, karambits, cane, even hatchet; all the fun stuff where you get to play with different ranges and if you ever have to defend yourself with a beer bottle or a peace of metal pipe on the side of the road you'll have a pretty quick theory of what you can or can't do with it.
