I have found that people tend to get super-offended if you delete them from Facebook, even when they don't actually like you in real life.

For example, on at least three occasions I got dumped by a girl I was seeing for some stupid reason, so then I deleted them from Facebook, only to receive a text hours later telling me it was soooooo mean for me to delete them. Likewise, I have girls show zero interest in me, mock me and reject me when I ask them out, only to try and add me on Facebook afterwards.

If people don't like you and can't be bothered to make an effort with you in real life, why do they care so much about being Facebook friends with you?

I wonder if some people are just selfish and not used to being judged for their behaviour towards people they deem to be "beneath them" in their little imaginary social hierarchy.

Maybe having lots of Facebook "friends" makes them feel like they are very popular.

80% of people are friends with people on facebook they do not like or barely know.

It's very true.

It is very true if you are in high school.

I think they do it only for friend count to look cooler.

You're just a fill-in guy for their 1,000 "friends" on facebook...

I wish I could get off it but I'm totally hooked. My best friend from when we were kids lives in another city than me now (we both left our hometowns to go to two other places) so we always keep in contact.

How did you get away from it?

it was a while ago...i think i gradually started going on it less and less when an actual and very close friend of mine who would often talk to me over fb stopped contacting me. i would see a bunch of posts and stories of her life, and of others and i'd feel horrible. also, i was sick of the LIKE THIS IF ( ) tripe and the general feel of a popularity contest that was going on. i only deactivated it recently though, after a nagging in the back of my mind about abandoning FB and leaving all my embarrassing info and posts behind.

i deactivated, not deleted it because someday i'll go back and quickly save some photos or posts or something after deleting them for good, to not have regrets.

until recently i had the password and email to my sisters FB, when i'd go in it my head would nearly cave in from all the banal and superficial nonsense, it's even worse than mine.

Those sounds like people who like to get attention. It also sounds like they are using social media as an excuse to find ways to gossip about other people.

As for being rejected by someone, I do the same thing. I figure there is no point in keeping someone on my page if they can't take an interest in me.

The next time someone pulls this on you I would tell them "Hey I am sorry that you feel that way but let's face it. Weren't you the one who dumped me or made it clear that you are not interested in associating with me? So why would I keep contact with you?"

Then just let them talk.
