As someone with Asperger Syndrome who needs help with personal care, I rely on my family a lot and its probably not fair to them.

I think I should have a right to a decent job, and should not be put off from doing a job because its outside my locality. To this extent I think I should be able to be supported in my employment should I get a top position.

I have put a petition on the UK Prime Minister's website, calling on the government to introduce a scheme whereby disabled people are encouraged into senior positions and which allows them to put a portion of their salary tax-free towards paying for a professional support worker or carer.

This would mean that people like me with AS would be able to do the high paying jobs we are capable of doing and be supported in doing them by a carer or professional worker.

I ask that fellow Aspies support my petition - it is available to sign at the following address:

This is a unique position/idea.

It almost sounds like this is a petition to force people with disabilities to be given better jobs so that they can afford treatment or assistance. If that is the case, I do not agree with the idea. I would rather have better health care services so that no matter what job someone has, no matter if they mop floors or are president of a company, that if you have a disability and need additional assistance with life, that it is offered free or low cost.

I respect you a great deal for getting up and putting this motion forward, but I can't say I completely agree with what you are requesting. If I am wrong, I misunderstood the idea, please tell me, so I can have a better understanding of this.

Personally I think that such care should be available to all with the current state of the NHS it would unfortunately be impossible to provide such care for all so the people receiving the care should have to make a means tested contribution towards the cost. Also surely anyone is entitled to help or support as even if they are in a low level position they are entitled to support and help so that they may maintain that position as it is better than having that individual in a lower level job that they would be having a lower quality of level, paying less in tax, contributing less to society etc.

sure if they need it. i also think its very funny that to get anyone to do something tax money has to be involved. why? is it because someone could take you to court?

Australias health care system is so screwed anyway, no amount of petitions would help.
Since I do not know the state of health care in other countries, I cannot comment.

Yes indeed. Very few doctors outside of Brisbane even know about Aspergers in adults. It's assumed that just kids (and mostly boys) have the condition.

I've seen our state hospital system steadily deteriorate over the past 20 years.

I have met a few doctors and shrinks who 'claim' to have knowledge or experience with AS. One tried to tell me I am not an aspie, but instead have adhd. I paint miniature figurines. I enjoy making fiddly jewellery. I love all things tiny and complex.
Another just sat on a medical fence and said that he 'does not like to apply such lables' (implying that AS is simply a made up excuse for bad behaviour and neuroses).
I have come to the conclusion that the only ones who actually are capable of not being idiots are those who charge several hundred dollars an hour and are therefore only accessable to those with resources.
Medicare will happily pay for up to five visits per year, as long as you are referred by a GP. back to square one...

And I think it is silly for them to say they don't want to apply a "label". I think of it more as a matter of providing an identity and an explanation for how we behave.

Well, I don't like to label people, so we're not going to give you chemotherapy. ;)

Not in the way you are suggesting. They should only be supported if they truly need it.

But who determines whether or not someone deserves assistance?

- The government who has so many agendas but none relating to helping people?
- Centrelink and Social Security who can never make up their minds about what the rules are?
- The psychologists who know nothing about AS?
- The GP's who are a bunch of total idiots with no clue?

Even people with very high functioning autism can struggle a lot in life so it is very hard to draw a dividing line between people who need help and those who don't.
