Death metal is a pretty unpopular genre among most people, but I love it. Black metal and thrash are cool too. To the new and uninitiated, bands like Cannibal Corpse and old Mayhem will sound like pure chaotic noise. But this music has an underlying order and requires a lot of talent to excel in. I think aspies are in a unique position to appreciate it because of our talent for finding patterns and noticing details that other people miss.

There is a lot of death metal that I like, and a lot that I just think sounds generic. The bands who actually experiment with different playing styles and cool patterns are the ones I generally like, while the ones that just try to be "MOAR BRTL THN J00" don't appeal to me as much.

One of my friends once asked me why I like listening to such intense music given my auditory sensitivity, I don't exactly remember what I told him, but I definitely think part of it is because I pick up on the finer details more easily than a lot of people. I crave music that is intricate and challenging, and I often find "simple" music to be kinda boring. That's not to say simple music can't be good, because I enjoy punk and its many offshoots as well, but I find that a lot of mass-produced pop music tends to insult my intelligence.

Or maybe overdoing the twangy guitar and mixing it in with nasally yet very poppy sort of vocals...and that the lyrical content tends to be very redundant. That said I like Johhny Cash, and if there was more modern 'country' that sounded more like that then I would not dislike the genre all that much. But all the modern country I hear makes me cringe for the most part....nothing to do with anything cosmetic, its hard on the ears and makes my head hurt just like popular pop singers.

at least that is how this liberal leaning individual who claims to dislike country feels about country music....can't speak for the others, and certainly cannot speak for the non liberal leaning individuals who also dislike country, or do they all like country?

How is it unpopular? A lot of it is crappy but I thought that was one of the more popular genres these days.

Psychedelic rock, it is absolutely amazing but do not think it is very 'popular....same with metal, though there is stuff that is not metal that the media will describe as metal. If they have an award for the catagory of 'best current metal band' for music awards chances are the award would not actually go to a metal band.......probably some metalcore, or some kind of core or screamo sort of stuff.

Opeth are an amazing metal band who transcend the genre.

Indeed they are, though I have to admit I have not listened to them in a while.

This thread feels like "Name every genre" a bit, I thought most of these genres were pretty popular compared to some of the stuff I listen to...

Speed Merengue (Acid/Latin speedcore): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tFmP8ibmmeA

I don't know what this is called, but it's Polka/Glitch/Baroque (all three are unpopular): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aqhS8n9eacw

Progressive Rave: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4weCMSv0S7Y

Mashcore (NSFW, like noise/gabber/comedy): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y3eDEGpVjBg

But of course, you could probably lump this all under techno if you didn't care for sub-genre (bottlenecking music etc.).

Progressive Jazz: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x2We0zoJNL0

Noise Rock: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=quCnLEr3r-0

I can definitely say that not all conservatives like country. Most of the metal heads I've known over the years are/were conservative, and hate country.

I've been a fan of Nevermore since '99. Carcass since high school. They've both changed heavily through the years. I like all of Carcass's stuff except for Swan Song. Their newest release is amazing.

As for Nevermore, Warrel Dane's vocals are as important to me as Jeff Loomis and the rest of the band's contribution. To me, their material prior to Enemies of Reality is the best. That stuff is truly original. People either love it or hate it. A sign of artistic success.
