Hey, Mac users (all 4 or 5 of you), are you going to upgrade to Tiger?

I voted for "Yes, after I'm sure any major bugs are gone".

I'm buying it sooner because Amazon is offering a rebate, but I'm going to wait to install it.

I would say no until the upgrades fix bugs.
I held off on X.2 until X.2.8 and bug fixes
that apple didn't acknowledge at the beginning
were addressed.

I would also look into legal, and consumer
pages of fixes and patches that apple
doesn't want you to know about.

When I upgraded to X.2.8, I hit lawyer
pages that offered unofficial apple fixes
that apple would let you know about.

This applies to any upgrades they do,
be it 9.1-9.2.2, X.1-X.1.5, X.2-X.2.8, I didn't
go X.3 yet since it was a interim OS until
X.4 which is a genuine upgrade.

Sincerely,
Ghosthunter

I was happy with OS9, I knew my way around it. I don't like X that much...it has some annoying features. I don't see any point in upgrading, there's often very little difference between releases, just a lot of hype.

OS 9.x is really wonderful. I like the
control the user has in custom installing,
and creature comforts that normally
had to be installed extra.

I may have a second Wallstreet with
X.2.8, but rarely use it. I just enjoy
the ease and use of OS 9.x and it's
not-so-ram-hogging capatbilities, yet
modern sleekness.

From,
Ghosthunter

I preordered from amazon too. My plan is to try to wait a month or 2 before installing it, but I'll be amazed if I can even wait for a couple of weeks after it arrives. At least I have an external clone of my hard drive, just in case!

I have two hard drives, with OS9 on one and 10.2 on the other. I hope to get (I'd better get) a new external hard drive in a few weeks. I may install 10.4 on that, if I can afford it; I shouldn't let myself fall way behind on Apple's technology, but some of my applications (Photoshop 7, Peak, etc) may not work on 10.4, so 10.2 will still be my primary OS.

10.2 works the way my mind works, and I love it. Didn't see any advantages for me from 10.3, and I worry that 10.4 may be the same way. (what's this "dashboard" thingy?) Anybody for OS 11?

I still need OS9 for two things: Sony never wrote the software needed to import pictures from my Mavica MVC-CD1000 camera to OS10, so I go to 9 for that. Also, I still build my web pages with the very old Adobe PageMill, which was never upgraded for OS10, but which is more than I need for my simple web pages.

I have both MacOSX 10.2.8 and MacOS 9.2 running on my 7 YO Power PC G3 (266 Mhz, to boot). OSX runs flawlessly on it (albeit a smideon slow, to be expected) and still use Netscape Communicator 4.72 for classic Mac for emails and newsgroups (will run side-by-side with OSX apps), as I have found nothing better for that. When I reboot this unit in 'classic' 9.2 mode, it *SCREAMS*.

The only thing that really bugs me about OSX is that screenshots are saved as .pdf files, while screen shots when booted in 9.2 are much better, easier to work with simpletext files. That is a huge difference when I am working with topographic map images that are screenshot from the Terraserver website, as they can be mosaiced together with zero distortion in that mode, but not in .pdf.

I'll hold off on any upgrades to OSX 10.4 until I find out if it would be to my advantage AND if it will work on this old machine.

;-)

Mike
