After living in different regions of California, I've seen the difference between night and day on the way aspies have been treated.
After attending primary education in Orange County and working as a substitute paraprofessional in primary education at San Francisco, sadly enough, I haven't seen any difference in the way the autistic kids have been treated, regardless of the different political leans. Although people say kids are cruel, children only act out the unconscious attitudes of the adults in the society around them. Though, some of the other young adults that were my housemates in the bay area at the time seemed more open-minded about autism and more skeptical about the idea of it needing a cure.
Also, when I went to UC Santa Cruz, the people there were much more open minded about differences overall. The culture was very individualistic and it was easy for almost anyone to make friends there. Whenever someone did anything or said anything that seemed weird people would just say, "It's Santa Cruz." I blended in well and was happy.
Anyway, I decided to bring up this topic because I've seen articles on the most gay friendly universities in the U.S. So, I was wondering, why not write a post about the most Aspie friendly (or unfriendly) places? Though, I don't just have educational institutions in mind.

Hmm, I lived in Santa Cruz from 1977 to 1981 - Concord, California 81-82, then San Francisco from 1982 to 1986. I guess I would have to agree than Santa Cruz was the most tolerant of them all. On the surface one would think San Francisco would be. But when it came to being accepted versus rejected by people I think. Santa Cruz was the most accepting. I have not been there in about 21 years so I don't know what it is like today though. But it was a very far out place - It might help that a significant portion of the population is high at any given time. 8O

As far as jobs are concerned:

IT is probably most tolerant for Aspies--as many people in the IT field ARE Aspies.

It is probably least tolerant for Aspies in the fast-food/retail field. There, Autistic-type behavior is frowned upon because of the perceived need to keep a "customer-base"--thus, earning money for the company.

Don't go job-hunting in Michigan if you're on the Spectrum. Employers there are generally interested only in employees who mind their own business, don't ask questions, and who don't have special needs (unless they're looking for a few "mentally challenged" individuals who will work for less than Minimum Wage).

And if your special interest does not involve hunting, football, baseball, basketball, hockey, muscle cars, big trucks, consuming vast quantities of alcohol, and abusing your wife and children, you may as well hire yourself out as a gimp to some dom or domme who will be utterly thrilled to beat the ever-loving snot out of you on a daily basis.

I wish this site had a "like" button! I live in the frozen h*** of Michigan as well. If you don't fit their little mold, you are screwed. I once got turned down for a job because of this. I came to the interview well dressed and answered the questions honestly. The other idiot who was interviewing with me dressed very poorly, but liked huntin' and all that other crap that the interviewer was interested in that DID NOT RELATE AT ALL to the job. I am not interested in making friends at work at all. If I were mentally capable enough to work full time, I would still be viewed as unfriendly. I just think that work is what it is. I don't have time or patience for others' bs. I have a hard enough time with trying to control my tendency to meltdown when there is any pressure on me or if I am around too many people and I can't escape to attempt to recover.

Actually if I had the place to go to and the place to store, I would like to trick out a truck. I spend a lotta of time reading a 4runner forum. Have to heed someones advice there though, don't do the mod unless you need it.

I would also have to admit that I didn't care about (American) football until I went to a few games at college. Now pro football is the only sport I watch all the rest take too much time.

Some truthes here though.
