Interview with Carly Fleischmann's father
There is an interesting interview with Arthur Fleischmann, father of Carly Fleischmann, about electro-convulsive shock therapy and her current situation.

So it washer choice and she did thorough research herself and decided to risk it and what could the parents do about it? She is an adult so they couldn't stop her. But I doubt this story will get everyone to stop with their rumors. People will believe whatever they want.

It's interesting that he uses this language:
This wording seems to communicate a different idea than "it was entirely her decision" -- but it could easily just be a way of saying "I wish this hadn't happened and I could have stopped it."
I hope she recovers and finds a better way of managing distressing OCD symptoms. I hope the whole family does well.
I have read about this. I have to say that given the specific situation especially, I was really surprised that she was given the ok to undergo electroconvulsive therapy for OCD.
There has been little supportive evidence that it actually helps OCD. Particularly given what is put forth in this interview, I'm even more perplexed- she was having increased seizures in combination with some diminished language ability but they went forward with the ECT? That just makes no sense. I don't know what "specialist" ok'd it but this is one of those situations where I'd consider it to be more about the specialist wanting to gather data rather than thinking it could definitely help [and I'm really not one to buy into that much]- because really what doctor would ethically, given those factors, say "yeah, let's go ahead with this"?
Oh so you are having increased seizure activity? And they are affecting your language? And... we aren't quite sure why that's happening? And ECT is not really even a supported therapy for OCD?
OK LET'S GO AHEAD WITH IT ANYWAY. TOTALLY MAKES SENSE.
Someone made a bad call here, it's really just a matter of who.
