I was raised by religious parents in a non-religious household and I'm not religious. I'm not exactly an atheist, though.

While not a Quaker, there is much about them that I like, particularly in their traditional Sunday meetings without sermons.

In case you are not familiar with that, you might watch the movie Friendly Pursuasion. Their Sunday meeting in the movie is very much like I have been told about by others. I used to live in what was once a Quaker community but the Quakers there are greatly outnumbered by non-Quakers any more. During the years I lived there, I never visited the local Quaker church.

As I understand the Quaker Sunday Meeting, the Quakers sit in the pews and stay quiet unless they feel moved to speak. Then they stand up and say what they feel moved to say and then sit back down. Apparently it applies to all members regardless of sex and age. One guy who grew up there told me once that during the first third of the meeting and the last third of the meeting, it was strictly the elders who could speak, but anyone could speak in the middle third. (I don't know if the thirds are of equal duration.) He also said that sometimes they may have the entire meeting without anyone being moved to say anything.

If there was a nearer Quaker facility to where I live now, I would likely go there at least on occasion. From what I've been told, I think that they would be a far greater fit for me than the more mainstream churches.

I cannot answer your question. I grew up in a religious house, and although I would not exactly call myself religious now, I would call myself spiritual. I believe in the God my family believes in and the basic tenants, but I have not found a religion that seems to be a good fit. Or perhaps it is more that I have seen too many religious hypocrites and it leaves me feeling disillusioned. But I am strong in my personal faith.

I was raised in a Methodist household and had to go to church until I was a teenager.

I grew up in a light to moderately religious household and became non religious but keep a few rituals because I like them or for family bonding reasons.

I grew up in a religious household and...I'm not sure. I still go to church and youth group, but I don't really think about God or do any of the things that a Christian is supposed to do. I have periods where I want to be a really strong Christian, but those always pass and I go back to my normal self, thinking and obsessing about all the things I want to. I don't want to go to hell, and I always told myself I'd become a Christian at some point in my life, even if I wasn't going to right at the moment. But most of the time I just feel confused about religion.

Parents were/are both religious (read scripture, pray, etc), but they never taught us any of it and we didn't go to church as a family. The extent of our household being religious was we celebrated Christmas... with zero emphasis on Jesus. I don't know, maybe that does not make sense to word it that way, but I would hardly consider myself to have a religious upbringing even though both of my parents do practice.

Maybe it means religious parents who did not teach their religion to their children? Not sure how common that is though. Maybe in households with parents of different religions?

Just what I got taught in school.

I'm considering taking up religion though. Not for spiritual reasons but rather to have access to a community.

So now 48% + 24% = 72% non-religious. That's much larger than I thought. Are you all posting from Soviet Russia? 8)
