Overmoderation?

Ok. There are a lot of us who are new moderators, and it may take some time for us to really get a feel for the job. Alex has provided us with some guidence, but we still have to make judgement calls. I'm posting this thread so that we have a place to vent if we think that there is some overstepping of the bounds. As always, try to follow the rules of the forum, but feel free to let us know if we are making decisions which seem too harsh. We need your help to get us through the growing pains.

PM's also work. If you have to abuse us, this is the best way.

Ah well, I don't mind. I'm just afraid (literally) of losing it, I put a lot of work into my writing.

(also, I kinda guessed that you didn't have any power in there, because there's no Moderator's Link under the Roleplaying Description)

This is the best idea since sliced bread.

I used to mod at a place with 100,000 members, and have a lot of experience with this. I would be happy to help any new mods out if they want it.

Please feel free; I for one need all the help that I can get. And for anyone, if you see something that upsets you, let us know. We might not be able to do things, but we might, as it were, be able to unruffle some feathers - or at least explain why we can't fix things.

This site has had ridiculous overmoderation in the past.

You need to make some rules that people should follow. A system will not work if certain people think bans are deserved for certain things, and others do not.

I, personally would crack down on the SPAM, and the trolls. Other people may completley disagree and concerntrate on trolls.

SPAM irritates the sh*t out of me, it congests up the whole forums with poinless one word posts people are only doing to raise their post count.

Spam destruction is our main purpose. We are not going to ban anyone, just refer problems to Alex. Trolling is harder to detect. Unless the material is so offensive that it is a direct attack or something really inappropriate (porn ect) we shall leave it alone. That's how I, at least, view our mission. We'll let y'all know if orders from on high change. I am a firm believer in loose reigns.

I think a suitable punishment would be to re-set their post counts, or deduct posts. The best moderation in my opinion is casual moderation.

A bad moderator is someone that acts like a dictator or someone that thinks they're a cut above everyone else. I was casual at modding and pretty much everyone was happy. The only reason I don't mod now is because this one bitchy girl (may I mention, a hitler with a pretty face) snapped me on intechnicalities.

This sticky was a great idea. Too often forum mods seem to become more and more distant from the "common folk." On other boards, some people held the view that mod=god. It is great that there's a publicly viewable thread for this kind of discussion, takes a bit of the "black box" element out of how many people view mods on other boards. Not to mention that interaction is a Good Thing™.

yeah basically my idea is that mods dont play police, they play firefighter.

also, you shouldn't be proud of being a moderator as my criteria for picking moderators isn't based on how good of a moderator i think you'd be and more of randomness. Also, being a moderator isn't permanent. We used to have "permanent" moderators and they all got burned out.

but if a moderator overmoderates, i'll probably just fire him or something.
