We should be allowed to create are own passwords or there should be a checkbox to allow us to save our password if we forget them.

You CAN create your own password. Go to your profile page and the change-password entries are near the bottom of the page just above the avatar section.

As far as saving goes, that's a browser issue. WP issues a 30-day authentication cookie for access so if you have cookies enabled you should be able to stay logged-in forever as long as you use the same machine/browser every time and visit at least once a month. Failing that, some browsers are able to save the password information and automatically fill in the blanks every time you go to the login page.
