Philosphical thread spurned from NCE thread.
Okay, this is the thread that you can blame for this one:
http://www.wrongplanet.net/modules.php? ... 09&start=0
We were having a discussion about whether or not to ban the hijab. So somebody said about respecting the way we do things here. Another said about 'shouldn't have to betray their religion'
So.....here's a question for you:
Is it possible to respect traditions without necessarily following them?

My question is; can I create a new tradition then, when it goes against western societal norms, can I retreat back to my "tradition" argument? Can I be completely ignorant to how a society I AM WILLINGLY MOVING TO does NOT operate the same way my old, outdated, 200000 year old society works?
OK, I've read that often "muslims" (in particular) are NOT integrating themselves into new countries but rather trying to bring their whole life with them to make a new community that is completely independent of the rest of the country. Basically, they are forming countries within existing countries and refusing to "melt." I think thats not good - thats not equality, thats difference (thats dangerous).
Is it possible to follow traditions without following them? I think very much so! I think it requires an open mind in that one can "melt" into society. I see many muslims wearing head scarfs but hanging out with black people, white people, hispanics, etc. They are melting. They are saying:
"I'm not forgetting my roots but I'm not stuck in them, either. I'm a muslim-'Canadian'"
I imagine that refusing to 'melt' is 'refusing to acknowledge the differences in others.'
I think a large part of intolerance is an over-exposure to certain religion/traditions/customs. A lot of people have no problem taking part in a custom/tradition when they visit a foreign land and are invited to participate in a local custom/ceremony. Yet, put them in a situation where they must participate in a custom/religious tradition such as Christianity, where they have been repeatedly exposed to it for their entire life, and they'll get all riled up.
