I've already complained to my local MP about them but so far nothing is done and at this rate if anything it will be in a century... I mean, I have a blocked out window and they still blast their goddamn noise through like they were the most important thing in existence. I swear, sometimes I feel like throwing a brick at them...

Who else can I complain to?

I don't think there is much that really can be done assuming they're with in reason volume wise, music is pretty integral to the ice cream truck business and they won't turn it off just for you.

But if it is as loud as OP is saying then there could be a way to file a noise complaint where they get decibel meters and measure if it exceeds a certain level.

Phone the council. Keep a log of when the ice cream truck is making noise and for how long.

In my county, the noise ordinance requires the noise be measured between 8:00 a.m. and 11:00 p.m. from the closest part of the complainant's property (sidewalk or fence) to the source of the noise, and must be measured to be at least as loud as 120 decibels (as loud as a vacuum cleaner if you stood right next to it). So, it must be very loud. It seems to me that the ordinance is probably a way to restrict construction or over-the-top parties.

Wow, that's loud AspieUtah... I guess no one gives a hoot about people passing nearby? Some really couldn't care less for others... as long capitalism reigns supreme your hearing is secondary, I guess.

http://www.wiltshire.gov.uk/communityan ... isance.htm

And at the bottom is if you want to do it independently. Link:

Yeah, I should begin by discussing it with them... how on Earth could that be done? I can't exactly go running after a moving van... when it arrives it'll soon be gone, before I could go down to talk to them... or, I guess, I could try complaining to the council anyway... thing is that I did that through their webform a month ago with no response, so...

Hm. I rechecked the ordinance ( http://slco.org/slcohealth/envRegs/reg2 ... luCtl.html ). It appears to have been amended since it was first adopted in 1984 (about the time I last checked it). The weighting of the decibels appears to be different, but the results appear to be largely the same with some tweaking here and there. The posted hours are different, at least.

But, apart from actual sound measurements, our law-enforcement agencies tend to "warn" noise makers even when they don't exceed legal limits. I bet most agencies would do this as a courtesy.

I've recently had a few problems with the ice cream vans too but I'm lucky as it only last for under 30 minutes a day as I live a nice cul-de-sac and it only does one stop on my street, and then does another 3 stops until I can't hear it anymore.

You're pretty lucky though. My main gripe at the moment is some '*%#£' driving their van around the street with their very loud and excruciantingly painful bass music blasting out of their speakers. It's caused me to have so many meltdowns that I'm sure I've got some permanent scars on my head from me slamming my head on the wall. :wall:

The van drives down the street behind my house (which may I add is quite a bit away from my house) randomly throughout the day and even with my ear defenders on, I can still hear the random pounding of whatever crappy song they're listening to.

It's very awful.

I live in the States.

Like a PP said, noise levels are measured from the edge of your property. No ice cream truck comes close to nuisance level decibel wise.

The only places that can out right ban ice trucks are city ordinances. Those are few and far between. Our city has an 8 am to 10 pm curfew, but that is it.

For every one person who hates them, there are 20 who lines up and buys the treats. That is what keeps the trucks coming. Some years we have little to no kids, and the trucks stop after a couple weeks. No reason to waste gas for no profit. This year we are over runned with little ones, so I'm sure I'll see the trucks all summer.

It sounds like you have sound sensitivity. Have you tried aways to make it more tolerable like noise canceling head phones?

Maybe if you bought some ice cream, it might change your mind.

I'm sorry you're having this issue....but ice cream trucks have been around a long time, and kids love them.

Maybe, as others suggested, get some earplugs.

They're a life saver.
