First off Apple responded:

Quote:
We have removed apps from the App Store that use the Confederate flag in offensive or mean-spirited ways, which is in violation of our guidelines. We are not removing apps that display the Confederate flag for educational or historical uses.

Secondly Apple isn't alone in this matter.
Thirdly Apple has begun reinstating educational and informative apps regarding the Confederacy, though is now receiving public backlash for the decision.
Fourthly Apple has been censoring the iOS App Store from the very beginning and openly stated they wouldn't allow any apps that were deemed offensive to any groups of people on their App Store.
Hell they won't even allow Sex Apps and those with indecent imagery on the App Store.

Amazon has banned all sales of products featuring the Confederate flag and apps on their App store.
Walmart has also removed everything that has a Confederate flag in their stores as have most of the other retailers.
Sony has begun purging PSN of Confederate flags
Microsoft is in the process of following suit.
Yes it even reached Valve and Steam is now being censored (Though this is not the first time Steam has been censored).

Etc...

States that issued Confederate flag license plates and drivers license are now recalling them.

Is this a slight over reaction probably...

Though you really cannot be against companies taking this kind of action against emblem of slavery, without showing your racist side.

Though the biggest question is why isn't Google following suit?
If Google was smart they would have reacted first which would have repaired their relationship with the public (they are still getting heat from user data mining and user data selling).
It would have also been a way for Google to get loyal Android fans energized, thus giving them free marketing especially online (Android fans are worst in my experience when it comes to crowing about their phones).

Though on the other hand, Google could stand to gain a few points in market share in the U.S. and abroad against those who are silently racists and hate filled.

As for Apple's "censorship" of iOS, they have been getting significants amount of public backlash for allowing inappropriate and unsavory content on the U.S. and Canadian App Stores...
Many groups in both countries have accused Apple being complicit in allowing minors to download mature content, and allowing racist, sexist, homophobic, and hateful content on the iOS App Stores.
Even a few U.S. states have launched inquires into the iOS App Store after public petitioned them to do it.
NY is one of them.

In the EU, Apple has been called to Brussels to report the European regulators about the inappropriate and offensive content allowed on the EU App Stores repeatedly.
The EU has been pressuring Apple to do more to protect consumers from these kinds of Apps.
Germany, France and Spain have also launched inquiries into Apple to see if iOS App Store has broken hate speech laws and consumer protection laws by allowing certain apps on the store.

In the EU and most EU countries (with Germany and France being the strictest) that punish the merchant/seller for selling/allowing for sale products that offend and/or spew hate against any group(s) in society.
Not only are you publicly ordered to remove said product, you also get huge fines and run the risk of being banned from operating in said country.

Video games especially get censored all the time in the EU and Germany.

The point being, you the company gets punished in the public and by most governments for the material you sell and/or allow.
