My mum said once to me "man up and get a job"

In what ways is that comment unfair?

Without knowing the situation, it's hard to comment.

Considering that the opposite concept would be to "Boy down and remain unemployed", my guess is that she wants you to mature and assume responsibility for your own income, instead of pretending to be a little boy and living/leaching off of her income for the rest of your life.

But that's just my opinion.

Hahahaha

Jamesy - Sometimes women say this to each other. Again, not knowing the situation it's hard to comment, but essentially it sounds like your mom is saying that a person with no job isn't behaving like an adult. So she's expecting you to do whatever it takes to become employed. Moms sometimes say harsh things because they're one of the few people who CAN speak to a person so bluntly. Sometimes we need to hear things like that. Or she may not understand your full situation, in which case you could explain it to her.

Usually "manning up" involves some degree of sacrifice. Like sucking it up. She means to push yourself to get a job even though it may not be what you want to do.
