I don't like people who are overly attached to me.

Overly attached is a misnomer for "incompatible", and it typically happens when people meet through dating or in other superficial ways.

To me, "attached" is a metaphor for what occurs when couples are together.

For me, attachment occurs long before you are formally together. It's typically a consequence of obsessing about a girl you have a crush on. The situation where one of the people is "overly attached" typically occurs when one of the people has been obsessing a lot about the other, while the other one more or less have lost interest and moved on. This typically happens when somebody that forms strong attachments has been dating a more typical person that has lost interest. Thus, it is the consequence of incompatibility and using unsuitable methods for meeting each other.

Later on, unbalanced attachment can also occur because of incompatibility in attachment style. If one of the people then is "overly attached" it might lead to becoming afraid of losing the other, and this can result in controlling behavior. However, this is still the consequence of incompatibility in attachment style, and one of them forming a much stronger attachment than the other.
