Do you suffer from non-situation based depression? I seem to mostly suffer situation-based depression, but get depressed over things other people can overcome rather easily. Also maybe to some extent non-situation based depression. which is the worse, I think, because you can't do anything about it.

I often feel completely helpless because I don't have much love in my life that hasn't been sabotaged. I feel as if no matter how hard I try im fighting a losing battle

I have depression and depression is incredibly common among people with an Autistic Spectrum Disorder. If you can't get professional help, you can try some CBT online through moodgym.

What is non-situation based depression? Like for no reason? I don't really understand depression, it doesn't make sense the way it is described. I don't believe in chemical imbalances, the only way they can measure chemicals in your brain is to physically separate them from it and they have no understanding or knowledge of what their proper balance is. It seems much more of psuedoscience than one based on fact, its not the same as other medicine.

I would say yes tho, I am very depressed person and its hard not to feel hopeless when you don't know anything else. I've started medication but I don't expect any changes.

I have chronic major depression that doesn't ever go away but some medications have the potential to help but I hate the side effects from said medications. That being said I plan to begin medication again after my next appointment because I can't stand feeling this way anymore...I am depressing other people with my depression and I cannot get anything done. Shame they take so damn long to MAYBE work. -.- modern medicine would be so much farther if the companies and governing bodies would encourage advancement in new novel medications but it is the opposite.

How much depression does the average person get? Just need to know so I can take part in the poll.

Average person has periods of depression sometimes days, weeks, maybe even months but when you get into 2 or above you're possibly developing clinical depression.

Depression that is not situation IMO cannot be controlled unless through medication (unfortunately)
Situational depression can be at least improved via counseling/getting over or changing the situations that cause the depression...(though not always...)

I think that non situational depression can be alleviated massively through cbt. There are so many causes of major depressive disorder. A chemical imbalance is part cause and part symptom. Often it's a result of rumination isolation frustration etc. This isn't situational imo because these same sensations can be felt in any context. A depressed individual projects negative associations onto the world around him/her and this becomes a reflexive action. Sometimes this can be triggered by one traumatic experience which is never resolved and self destructive thinking patterns emerge. If this event happens in puberty its likely that that mindset will be subsumed into their adult personality.

I am severely depressed most days and it is directly related to autism and the hardships I endure because of it. I've tried to kill myself twice now, both were impulsive decisions.

The first time I had gotten pulled over drunk driving and I knew I was going back to jail, well jail is complete hell for someone on the spectrum and I felt it'd be easier to just die, so I reached for the bottle of antifreeze on the floor and slammed the rest of the bottle. Then I just waited to die in the jail cell. Obviously it didn't work.

The second time I had intentionally overdosed on heroin in hopes that my family would just think it was an accidental overdose rather then a suicide. That almost worked but unfortunately my family found me and the paramedics brought me back. I was so angry when I woke up in the hospital hooked up to a breathing machine.

I think that the link between autism and suicide is very real and I think something needs to be done about it!

I sometimes get bouts of depression ( like the past 2 weeks ), but I don't think I have ever been depressed except when I have been wronged or think I have been wronged. :(

Roughly doctors talk about two different types of depressions. One is called atypical depression and the other melancholic depression.

Common in the atypical presentation is

a) over-sleeping
b) fatigue
c) sensitivity to rejection of others
d) light response to good news
e) suicidal thoughts or behavior

Common in the melancholic is

a) under-sleeping
b) eating disorders
c) severe anxiety
d) no response to good news
e) psychosis

Also to mention is that atypical depression is common in Bipolar disorder (especially type 2) while melancholic depression is more common in unipolar depressions (and sometimes Bipolar I).

i have depression sporadically, i'm not entirely sure if it's situational or not, sometimes it's caused by things but a lot of the time it happens for apparently no reason.
